A Walk Through the Obituaries

obituary

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
–Ecclesiastes 12:7

Obituaries have been called “death notices,” last writes” and “a write of passage.”

Daily newspapers usually devote anywhere from a half-page to two pages a day to these little stories about the lives of people who no longer are among the living.

Obituaries are almost EXCLUSIVELY read by older people.

Older people find the obituaries interesting because they usually concern those the reader knows of or has personally known.–though there are OTHER reasons for one’s daily watch of the death announcements.  One older gentleman–after reading through the day’s obituaries–would announce to all in earshot: “Well, they’re gone and I’m still here: I’ve beat another one on the Great List of Life!”

The youth shun obituaries because obituaries usually feature two things the youth want NO part of: death and older people.

Obituaries DO concern the death of the one named in the obit BUT obituaries focus the attention of the reader NOT on the death of the one named  BUT on the LIFE of the one named.

Often, readers are informed where the deceased once worked; where the deceased once played; the organizations the deceased once belonged to; what the world viewed as the deceased’ ACCOMPLISHMENTS; the activities the deceased found enjoyable while alive; those persons who the deceased came in contact with: in short, how the fleeting time the deceased was given was spent while he was alive.

But–and here’s the secret the newspapers do not ever share with their readers: the living are mostly concerned with LIFE, not death.

Question: Beyond one’s own grandparents, how many ancestors OF HIS OWN FAMILY does the reader even know about?

The obituary is the world’s one last attempt to make the living believe that those who knew the deceased will spend more time thinking about him than it takes to read his obituary.

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.”
–Ecclesiastes 9:5

IS the reader a current fan of the obituary announcements?

DOES the reader concentrate on the deceased’s life or death?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
