Too Smart?

“A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.”
–Proverbs 29:5

Flattery will allow one to go many places.

One of the world’s oldest tricks–used to persuade readers/listeners to change their minds–is the one where the person is told they are “too smart” to believe what they believe.  The clear implication being that only stupid people would hold that particular belief–whatever it may be.

This tactic was brought to mind recently when memories of a local preacher (who was a nice guy, and therefore, a very effective false teacher) were evoked. This pulpit wolf would utter some of the most UNBIBLICAL statements.  If there were any objections or misgivings, he would repeat his original statement and then add (to the unconvinced one) ” You’re too smart to not believe that.  Come on!  You’re an intelligent person: you CAN’T be serious!”

He would then keep repeating his original, outrageous statement until all of those with any second thoughts had quieted down.

IF the man was directly challenged over something he said, he would almost always resort to “You can’t tell me you believe that!  You’re too smart a man (or woman)!”

In this manner, the local false teacher (who was a really nice guy) kept his congregation in line for years.  Essentially, the man beat his flock into submission with flattery and appeals to their intelligence (and to what OTHERS might think of their mental prowess).

In much the same manner, modern man has been told he is TOO SMART to believe the Bible.

Modern man has been repeatedly told he is too sophisticated to believe in an invisible creator in the sky.

Modern man has been herded into a certain set of beliefs by the media/education/science/culture/the world’s assumption that whatever is of God or Jesus Christ is something that only simple-minded knuckle draggers would place any stock in.

Basically, modern man has been indoctrinated that he has too much worldly knowledge to believe the simple truth.

And the constant repetition of how smart modern man is begins at an EARLY age: only then, it’s known as fostering self-esteem.

Children go to school, they are not taught even the basics of elementary subjects–things their grandparents and parents both knew–and YET modern children are told almost every day how clever, how ingenious, how SMART they are.

And then the child is handed a trophy or a ribbon or a certificate for being “who he is.”

So, the next time the reader is told how SMART he is, MAYBE someone is just trying to be nice.

MAYBE, the reader IS brilliant.

But more likely, the reader is being set up to believe something contrary to what he already believes.

Flattery can take a person a LOT of places.

It might even take the unwary down a slippery, deceptive path he otherwise might not go.

“For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”
–Romans 16:18

HAS the reader ever been told he is too smart to believe something he believes?

WHAT did the reader do?

DID he pretend to believe?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?

DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
