The Lord Cares For His Servants

care for

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
–Psalm 55:22

And interesting discussion was recently entered into about the LORD taking care of those who serve Him.

One of the participants in the conversation was not at all convinced that God would assume the burdens of His servants.  BUT, the number of verses in God’s Word assuring the reader of exactly that assistance is as diverse as the various and sundry needs of the servants of God.

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
–Philippians 4:19

“Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.”
–Psalm 37:8-9

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
–1PETER 5:7

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
–Isaiah 46:4

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.”
–Matthew 6:25-32

“Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
–Isaiah 41:9-10

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
–1JOHN 5:14-15

And there are a great many more promises that God makes to His servants.

These promises cover practically EVERY need a man could require.  From the physical (food, drink and clothing) to the spiritual (peace, a joyful future, salvation and love) to the intangibles (knowledge, wisdom, understanding) to the many different aspects of physical protection while in this world, God PROMISES to fulfill the needs of his servants.

And God WILL provide the NEEDS of His servants–if not the wants and desires.

HOWEVER, God even provides for the desires of His servants on occasion.

“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
–Psalm 37:4

What to take away from all of this?

IF a man is torn between truly serving the LORD and pursuing the things of this world, he should not be.

That man should serve God and all things he could ever desire will eventually be his.

On the other hand, the worker of iniquity has to settle for the things of the world and money–which are fine (but mostly overrated) for the here and now but not so great for the long term.

And those things are NOT in any way guaranteed.

Serve God and the reader will find his needs more than met.

Both in this life and the next.

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
–Isaiah 46:4

[NOTE:  God places a higher value on finding good help than man does.  Lest the reader be confused, becoming a servant of God is a fairly restrictive territory. A list of those who God calls “my servant”  is a VERY impressive one, numbering an even dozen.]

1- Abraham

“And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.”
–Genesis 26:24

2-Moses (Probably more references in God’s Word to “my servant Moses” than any other man except King David.)

“My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”
–Numbers 12:7-8

3- Caleb

“But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.”
–Numbers 14:24

4- David

“Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.”
–2SAMUEL 3:!8

“For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.”
–2KINGS 19:34

“Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle and cattle. And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it.”
–Ezekiel 34:22-24

David is referred to in God’s Word as “my servant” more frequently than any other man.

By far.

5- Job

“And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?”
–Job 1:8

6- Isaiah

“At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia”
–Isaiah 20:2-3

7 – Eliakim

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah: And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.”
–Isaiah 22:20-21

8- Israel

“But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.”
–Isaiah 41:8-9

9- Jacob

“Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.”
–Isaiah 45:1-4

10- King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon (Perhaps the most surprising name on this list!)

“Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations.”
–Jeremiah 25:9

11- Zerubbabel

“In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.”
–Haggai 2:23

12- Jesus Christ

“Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.”
–Zechariah 3:8

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Ecclesiastes 7:20

Ecclesiastes

After a while, when one studies God’s Word, one experiences the sheer delight of discovering a previously-overlooked verse.

Such was the circumstance surrounding the recent “discovery” of Ecclesiastes 7:20.

“For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”

NOW, there are a number of verses–both in the Old and New Testaments–which contain the same thought.

“They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
–Psalm 14:3

“Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?”
–Proverbs 20:9

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
–1JOHN 1:8

“God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
–Psalm 53:2-3

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”
–Romans 3:23

And Ecclesiastes 7:20 expresses important thoughts: thoughts which are not very popular during the times in which we live.

  1. That ALL men are sinners.
  2. That there are NO just men walking the earth.
  3. That NO man does good.

In addition, Ecclesiastes 7:20 provides the basis for SO MANY important conclusions from those three basic thoughts.

  1. Man NEEDS God’s mercy (grace) in order to enter heaven and avoid the torments of hell.
  2. It is important for man to think himself to be “good.” Man will constantly try to portray himself as a “good person.”
  3. It is important to man that OTHERS think him to be “good.”
  4. Man will perform “many good works” in the sight of other men in attempts to make himself appear to be a “good person.”
  5. The thought that NO MAN IS GOOD will not EVER be a popular one with men of the world.
  6. Fallen man, living in a fallen world, will grow progressively more wicked: putting the emphasis on his own works and diminishing the importance of God’s mercy.
  7.  God’s mercy includes His sending of His Son, Jesus Christ to satisfy God’s judgment for sin which man could not possibly pay.

All this is reason enough to experience sheer delight at reading Ecclesiastes 7:20.

“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.”
–Proverbs 21:2

“All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
–Proverbs 16:2

“For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”
–Ecclesiastes 7:20

Men Hunger For Their Own Flavor of Lies

cone - flavor

During a recent conversation which touched on the the topic of believing lies, several worthwhile points were made by all involved in the discussion.

1- Regardless of what they may claim, men would rather be told lies than the truth.

It has ever been so.

“That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits”
–Isaiah 30:9-10

“The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?”
–Jeremiah 5:31

2- AT least one person agreed with the statement, “People enjoy being lied to.”

“I used to think that people wanted the truth, but now I know they would rather hear lies. Lies are almost always more comfortable.”

Choosing to believe the truth FORCES a person to make choices.  Most would rather not go down that road and would MUCH rather continue on in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

3- Most people believe the lies told by KNOWN liars–particularly when those liars labor for the media.

“I believe that!”

4- Most of those in the discussion agreed that everyone wants to hear a particular FLAVOR of lie.

Which is why some people wholeheartedly believe the financial media.

Which is why others believe one cable news channel or another.

Which is why still others choose gossip rags and tabloids as their favorite flavor.

AND which is why some folks place their trust in TV preachers.

5- Most of those in the discussion also agreed that those folks–even though they may swallow any number of lies which they favor–DO not believe FLAVORS other than their own.

Which is why the person who is convinced that CNN and NPR always tell the truth can recognize the stories told by Fox News.

Which is why those who are loyal followers of Fox News easy recognize the deceptions of non-Fox flavors.

6- A great many folks will claim that they really want the TRUTH!

BUT, almost all of these folks will settle for lies.

One reasons being that MEN ARE LIARS.

“God is not a man, that he should lie”
–Numbers 23:19

When a person is swallowing fairy tales, he would rather those tales be seasoned with his particular flavor of lie.

DOES the reader believe he wants the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

HAS the reader thought the question through?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
