Does a Belief in An Eternal Life Lessen What’s to Be Found in This Life?

eternity

It is, at times, the NON-believer who will raise the most thought-provoking questions about the core beliefs of Christianity.

And so it was when a man who was a member of a false religion asked the following question in the most sincere manner possible.

“The Christian is promised eternal life–and that eternal life is full of joy and happiness and all things good and sweet.  Which would make THAT life so much better than this one we’re living now.  My question is, “Why would anyone in their right mind not focus on THAT life and just forget about the life we’re living now?” Doesn’t that life make what happens in this one seem pale and monotonous and weak by comparison?”

This was a good question (actually a couple of questions).

The person asking the questions touched on a MISTAKEN BELIEF about Christianity which MANY folks have: that a believer must be “good” person to achieve eternal salvation and enter the kingdom of heaven.  So there was perhaps fifteen minutes spent on what actually does constitute eternal salvation.

There were also several five-minute conversations about other MISTAKEN BELIEFS which non-believers have about Christianity.

BUT, the main answer to the man’s question(s) was rather short and sweet.

“Actually, what happens in this life is only a series of previews of eternity with God and Jesus–the very good times, that is. This life is only a test period to see where a person will spend eternity: nothing more, nothing less.  So, that makes what happens in this life VERY important.  Rather than pale and weak, this life seems VERY dynamic to the BELIEVER, who realizes that what comes next is so much better than the best this world has to offer.

This life is all about locating the keys to enter into heaven.  What happens in this life is like taking a pass/fail test for the rest of time. That’s not only dynamic, it’s exciting! “

From the various remarks, comments and questions, it appeared obvious this questioner had spent some thoughtful time on the entire concept of eternal life.

Which is one of the primary reasons his questions were so thought-provoking.

And fresh.

HAS the reader EVER thought about the value of eternal life vs that which is found in this present one?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

One’s Lifelong Network

wolf in sheep's clothing; wolves in the pulpit

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.”
–Proverbs 1:10,15-16

When one was younger, there seemed to be a tremendous migration from one’s neighborhood to places far off which appeared to be offering better jobs, more money and more opportunity.

“Come on!  Why don’t you go, too?  Everybody’s going!  Make a lot of money and besides, we’ll have a lot of fun, too!”

BUT not every young, VERY deceived heathen is deceived about EVERYTHING–and IF something sounds too good to be true, it most likely IS.

And so, one watched as his acquaintances hit the road to seek out fame and fortune in copper mines; in the trendiest boutiques; in cities where good musicians were appreciated.  Practically all were filled with hopes and dreams and youthful optimism.

“Come on!  Why don’t you go, too?  Everybody’s going!  Make a lot of money and besides, we’ll have a lot of fun, too!”

And what was the reply when asked to join in the migratory fun?

“I don’t think so.  You know, you spend your whole life building up relationships with people and building your network.  I can’t see throwing all of that away.  Besides, I can always go later.”

“Better go now while the gettin’s good!  You’ll be sorry.  We’ll be rolling in the dough and you’ll be stuck here trying to build a better network!”

But not ever rabbit hole is miles away.  Some can be found quite close to home.

And not everyone who smiles and pats a youth on the back and promises pie-in-the-sky is his friend.

Years after those youthful taunts ceased, occasionally one is reminded of what was said those many years ago when one meets one of those former journeyers on the street (after they had come back–“It wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.”).

The latest thoughts associated with that particular time have to do with NETWORKS and the questions which one has upon revisiting those memories.

When one is a young heathen, the networks one builds mostly have to do with money and opportunity (the same things one’s friends traveled far away to try their hands at).

Those networks were LONG on what a person could do for you and SHORT on what type of man that person was.

And so, one’s networks were naturally FILLED with associations with the wicked. (Of course, at the time, one was wicked ALSO–just younger and less experienced with the ways of the world.)

The wicked–being who they are–many times led young, deceived heathens on wild-goose chases.  The only difference between the misadventures of all of those wanderers one knew and one’s self was that at least one didn’t have far to go to be misused.

The primary question which seems to pop up years later is fairly rhetorical in nature; i.e., the answer is already known when the question is asked.

“Wouldn’t it have saved a lot of time and running around and resources IF one hadn’t associated with the wicked in the first place?  No matter what advantages they seemed to offer?”

So much for one’s network which one placed so much youthful emphasis on.

DOES the reader spend much time “building his network“?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Labor Day 2020

Labor Day

As the U.S.A. celebrates another Labor Day, the holiday that Americans will remember for 2020 will be unlike any other which came before.

For one thing, anyone who holds gainful employment on THIS Labor Day should get down and offer a prayer of thanks.

Labor Days past all celebrated the American worker and the “contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States.

A quick question:

How many of those toiling on Labor Day 2020 are working for iniquity?

Labor Day 2020 could just as easily celebrate jobs which are scarce and mostly minimum wage–where once they were good-paying and plentiful.

Employment–and the worldly benefits thereof–is largely a thing of the world AND regular readers should easily know about the things of the world.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1JOHN 2:15-16

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
–James 4:4

Since so many protest the mere mention of 1JOHN 2:15-16 or James 4:4, those verses will only be mentioned in passing.

A number of Americans will watch what remains of American football games on TV or in person this Labor Day weekend.  BUT, those games and this 2020 football season is VERY different than those which happened previously.

But, to the deceived, it doesn’t matter how much things change; eventually, “things will get back to normal.”  IF watching a football game between two teams in a practically empty stadium isn’t enough to convince the deceived that 1- what they consider “normal” will NOT be returning; and, 2- American football is one of those reminders of Americana which must go, then there’s not enough words to EVER convince them of the great changes which have taken place.

How many will spend any time at all contemplating the great differences between this Labor Day and the ones which preceded it?

LABOR DAY 2020: A MUCH DIFFERENT HOLIDAY THIS YEAR

MEANWHILE, there are a GREAT MANY differences between Labor Day 2020 and the ones which came before.

How many of those differences can the reader name?

AND, how many of those differences does the reader believe are SIGNIFICANT?

MORE IMPORTANTLY: does the reader know why all of those changes are occuring at this particular moment in time?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
