Does a Belief in An Eternal Life Lessen What’s to Be Found in This Life?

It is, at times, the NON-believer who will raise the most thought-provoking questions about the core beliefs of Christianity.

And so it was when a man who was a member of a false religion asked the following question in the most sincere manner possible.

“The Christian is promised eternal life–and that eternal life is full of joy and happiness and all things good and sweet.  Which would make THAT life so much better than this one we’re living now.  My question is, “Why would anyone in their right mind not focus on THAT life and just forget about the life we’re living now?” Doesn’t that life make what happens in this one seem pale and monotonous and weak by comparison?”

This was a good question (actually a couple of questions).

The person asking the questions touched on a MISTAKEN BELIEF about Christianity which MANY folks have: that a believer must be “good” person to achieve eternal salvation and enter the kingdom of heaven.  So there was perhaps fifteen minutes spent on what actually does constitute eternal salvation.

There were also several five-minute conversations about other MISTAKEN BELIEFS which non-believers have about Christianity.

BUT, the main answer to the man’s question(s) was rather short and sweet.

“Actually, what happens in this life is only a series of previews of eternity with God and Jesus–the very good times, that is. This life is only a test period to see where a person will spend eternity: nothing more, nothing less.  So, that makes what happens in this life VERY important.  Rather than pale and weak, this life seems VERY dynamic to the BELIEVER, who realizes that what comes next is so much better than the best this world has to offer.

This life is all about locating the keys to enter into heaven.  What happens in this life is like taking a pass/fail test for the rest of time. That’s not only dynamic, it’s exciting! “

From the various remarks, comments and questions, it appeared obvious this questioner had spent some thoughtful time on the entire concept of eternal life.

Which is one of the primary reasons his questions were so thought-provoking.

And fresh.

HAS the reader EVER thought about the value of eternal life vs that which is found in this present one?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
