“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
–James 4:4
Friendship with the world–as well as the things of the world–is most probably one of the BIGGEST temptations man has to overcome.
The things of the world offer delicious tastes.
The things of the world offer sweet and enticing smells.
The things of the world appeal to a man’s sight.
The things of the world offer rhythm and good beats.
BUT MOSTLY, the things of the world attract the desire of men to touch and feel them.
It is a maxim of those who work in marketing and retail: IF a store can ONLY get a person to stop for a second and pick up the product and look at it, there’s a better than 50 percent chance that the person will end up buying it.
This is one BIG reason that the area around a store cash register checkout is loaded with begging-to-be-picked-up impulse items. They attract the buyer’s attention and chances are, those things of the world will be picked and then bought.
It’s another reason for the many displays featured in superstore aisles within EASY REACH of a customer who happens to be passing by.
In the book/film Silence of the Lambs, the protagonist–who is a cannibal–makes an astute observation.
“We begin by coveting what we see every day.”
Yes, seeing is the first step to desiring something–BUT those feelings of wanting something (coveting) are made stronger by touching that something, whether it be a AA battery, a bigger car or house, a candy bar or a larger size of fries with your burger.
The things of the world are a prime temptation to man. They NEVER quit trying to drag man back to satisfying his senses.
And one of the ways man experiences that temptation is to touch it.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
HAS the reader ever considered how many things of the world he has purchased AFTER he picked one up?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
