It has lately been noticed HOW MANY mis-use the term “repent” or “repentance.”
This is particularly true of the church folk, who have been religiously misled on the matter.
One hears a great many declare that they want to (or have already done so) “repent of their sins.” A great many pulpit poachers declare that they want the congregation to “repent of their sins.”
OR, the question will be REPEATEDLY asked, “Have you repented of your sins?”
“You need to repent of your sins. Right now!”
This CONFUSES “repentance” with “penance” (something the Catholic Church puts a great deal of stock in).
When asked to explain what they mean by “repentance,” the VAST MAJORITY of folks begin by mentioning some type of sorrow is involved.
“It means I’m sorry for my sins.”
This is NOT repentance.
“Repentance” to the Christian COULD mean that there is remorse for past actions, BUT that is NOT the meaning of “repentance.”
REPENT means a “change of direction” or a “change of mind.”
Those who TRULY repent see God’s mercy (grace) in action.
The one doing the repenting NOW realizes the great weight of sinning against a holy God.
He then CHANGES DIRECTION in his behavior. Instead of running to embrace sin, the one repenting fights against sinful urges.
He does not always win.
After all, he is encased in a body of dust.
But instead of looking forward to and planning to sin, he NOW fights the good fight and struggles against sin and sinful behavior.
Instead of seeing sin as “fun,” the one repenting sees sin for what it is: DEATH.
When the believer sins, there IS remorse. After all, he FAILED in his struggle against sin.
However, the believer’s occasional failure drives home the absolute NEED for God’s mercy (grace).
BUT remorse is NOT repentance. Remorse is sort of a by-product of repentance, NOT repentance itself.
“I’m sorry!”–for however brief or long a time period–is NOT a “payment” for sins (to make things right with God).
Some churches make GREAT public displays of PENANCE.
But these great public displays are as far away from REPENTANCE as the sinner’s original unholy actions were.
DOES the reader associate the words “I’m sorry!” with repentance?
FROM where did the reader learn this association?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
DOES the reader believe he is saved?
DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
