What Are the People of God to Do?

where does it all end?

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. “
–Ecclesiastes 12:13

Someone once remarked, “There’s so many rules in the Bible!  How can anyone keep them all straight?”

That is SOMEWHAT accurate: there are a great many warnings to follow in the Bible.

BUT, many of the “rules” in God’s Word are for the reader’s PROTECTION.

“And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?”
–Deuteronomy 10:12-13

IF one keeps the “commandments of the LORD,” THEN one will enjoy a much more fulfilled, enjoyable life.

As Jesus Christ once put it,

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”
–John 14:21,23,15:10-11

SO, much of what God’s Word instructs the believer to do concerns keeping God’s commandments.

As Jesus FURTHER instructed,

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
–John 14:15

According to God’s Word, OBEDIENCE and LOVE appear to be very closely connected.

Perhaps this is why the world places such a LOW value on obedience?

According to the WORLD, one’s duty appears to be to “revolt” whenever one feels that he is not being treated fairly by the civil authorities.

THIS is what Americans are taught from an early age–particularly when it concerns the American “founding fathers.”

The “founding fathers” claimed “TYRANNY” is a reason to revolt against the powers that be–which is EXACTLY the opposite of what God’s Word teaches.

“I have sworn upon the alter of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”
–Thomas Jefferson

As Jefferson was NOT a Christian (far from it), it makes one wonder: to what God was Jefferson swearing?

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.”
–1SAMUEL 15:23

Sounds like there was a GREAT disagreement between the American revolutionaries and the Word of God.

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”
–Romans 13:1-2

“The moment the idea is admitted into society, that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence.”
–John Adams

“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.”
–1PETER 2:13-14

“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
–Thomas Jefferson

What is the reader to take away from all of this?

The people of God are to practice OBEDIENCE to God by keeping His commandments. Though this may not always be possible, the person who loves God and Jesus Christ will make every effort to be obedient to God’s commandments.

The people of God are NOT to put their faith in the words of the world.

Revolt, revolution and rebellion are ALWAYS wrong from a Biblical standpoint–though the world will not cease to provoke man into disobedience against God’s Word.

As Solomon the Preacher once put it,

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. “
–Ecclesiastes 12:13

DOES the reader get excited when the talk gets around to “rebellion“?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

The Modern Marriage Ceremony

wedding

Recently, while attending a wedding, it was decided to pay particular attention to  the ceremony.

A few thoughts follow which resulted from that attention paid.

  • There were any number of words spoken by the attending minister about “love.”  BUT MOSTLY about the “love” the two involved in the wedding should have for each other and what they were to do to increase this love and make it grow.
  • The modern wedding ceremony (at least the one which was recently attended) STILL refers to a number of phrases found in the Bible concerning marriage/love.  In particular, Genesis 2:24 and 1CORINTHIANS 13:4-7.

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

“Charity [love] suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”

  • Oddly enough, the attending minister truncated Genesis 2:24, omitting the last six words (“and they shall be one flesh.“). Although those involved in a marriage cut short by whatever reason usually attest to the trauma of losing their spouse.  As one man put it, “It was like a part of me was ripped away.”  One flesh.
  • These references to the Bible among a wedding crowd which appeared to lose interest quickly once the verses began to be explained–their eyes glazing over–seem to be a callback to a time when the majority of a wedding’s audience showed more respect for such traditions.
  • How many weddings of  these modern days feature children of the newly-wedded couple too old to be flower girls or ringbearers?
  • Weddings seem to be an opportunity for the clergy to present an infomercial about their churches–and a grand opportunity it is!  The clergy have captive audiences all to themselves for a few minutes to make the case of the value of their church.  The only other similar opportunity would be a FUNERAL.  As one minister once put it, “FUNERAL SERVICES are for the living, not the dead.”
  • Afterwards, a few traditions were observed.  There was a “receiving line” where the newly-wed couple greeted the guests as they left the church building.  The line at the wedding attended moved quickly and efficiently.  ANOTHER tradition was the guests were greeted as soon as they reached the door by a person with a basket.  The basket contained little vials of soap and small wands to make soap bubbles. It is a modern tradition to blow bubbles instead of throwing rice.  The crowd mingled in the churchyard for awhile, but seemed to lose interest quickly and when the wedding party DID appear, there were minimal bubbles offered by those remaining.  Supposedly, the story is that rice is no longer acceptable because it expands and makes birds EXPLODE?!?!
  • One of the most repeated claims made at many modern weddings was NOT heard at this one.  That claim?  “The reception lasted longer than their wedding will.”
  • At the end of the day, a few questions arose: “Are the marriage ceremonies of 100 years ago so different from the modern versions–and why are they so different?”

At the reception which followed afterward, it was noted that the American wedding reception had its own traditions which have (many times) become tiresome as the wedding party mindlessly marks them off of a list kept somewhere by whoever is in charge of the reception.

Before Social Distancing

BEFORE social distancing…

BEFORE the ubiquitous face masks…

BEFORE the gallon jugs of hand sanitizer…

Medicine fought the brave fight against infectious disease with the PLAGUE DOCTOR COSTUME.

Plague doctor costume

The purpose of the mask was to keep away bad smells, known as miasma, which were thought to be the principal cause of the disease before it was disproved by germ theory.[2][3] Doctors believed the herbs would counter the “evil” smells of the plague and prevent them from becoming infected.

Plague doctors wore their costumes in public to frighten the public and thus alert them to the fact that there was a plague. (Apparently, like coronavirus, there were those who doubted the official story.  The horror stories of plague (“The Black Death“) didn’t happen until AFTERWARDS.

This costume was also worn by plague doctors during the Plague of 1656, which killed 145,000 people in Rome and 300,000 in Naples.[19] The costume terrified people because it was a sign of imminent death. Plague doctors wore these protective costumes in accordance with their agreements when they attended their plague patients.

BEFORE social distancing…

BEFORE the ubiquitous face masks…

BEFORE the gallon jugs of hand sanitizer…

BEFORE the story of Germ Theory...

There was the story of Miasma Theory.

The miasma theory (also called the miasmatic theory) is an obsolete medical theory that held that diseases—such as cholera, chlamydia, or the Black Death—were caused by a miasma (μίασμα, Ancient Greek for “pollution”), a noxious form of “bad air”, also known as night air. The theory held that epidemics were caused by miasma, emanating from rotting organic matter.

The primary product of modern medicine seems to have been BETTER STORIES.

For over 1000 years, medical authorities have been “keeping people safe” by providing them with a series of stories about what is claimed to be happening to them.

“You’ve come a long way, baby!”

DOES the reader believe that the stories told today are more believable?
