“Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

“They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.”
Psalm 115:4-8

There are a LOT of misconceptions surrounding idols, idolatry and the worship of idols.

MOST–when they think of idol worship AT ALL–think of idol worship as bowing down to a statue or some other graven image–and that WAS the predominate form of idol worship thousands of years ago.

BUT man has ALWAYS bowed down to that which does not think or walk to talk.

Little wonder that IDOLATRY is one of the FIVE BIG SINS of the end times.

Modern idol worship is all about putting one’s faith in something other than God or His Son, Jesus Christ.

Which is a primary reason COVETOUSNESS is said to be idolatry.

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
–Colossians 3:5

“For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”
–Ephesians 5:5

It is fairly easy to see that a person who spends his whole life in pursuit of money or the things of the world has elevated money (or the things of the world) above most other things.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1JOHN 2:15-16

But the reader need not fear: the old-fashioned form of idol worship hasn’t disappeared.  In fact, old style idol worship is poised to make a BIG comeback in the end times.

“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.”
–Revelation 13:11-15

BUT few modern idolators will admit to worshiping idols.

IN FACT, such men will often go to GREAT LENGTHS to avoid admitting they are worshiping an idol.

This includes all of those who look approvingly as the latest government-funded statue of a “war hero” is erected.

This includes all of those who nod and smile as a statue of a skilled ballplayer is unveiled at the local park.

AND this CERTAINLY includes those who show reverence to the memory (mostly via statues) of a claimed holy man or woman.

“Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.”
–Deuteronomy 4:15-19

IDOLS ARE IDOLS: whether they depict approved likenesses (such as idols of Caesar, whom the Roman authorities forced the population to worship in the first century Roman empire) or not.

IDOLS ARE IDOLS: whether or not they depict a figure of someone pagans call a “god” or someone the churches call a “saint.”

Faith and Idols

FAITH: Believing What Is Not Seen

Idols are the result of men not having faith.

Men make idols of that which they trust.

Men put their faith in their idols.

Little wonder then that men trust Satan during the end times and worship him.

And those who make an accommodation with Satan HATE Jesus Christ passionately.

And, they hate the followers of Jesus.

“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”
–Matthew 10:22

The followers of Satan will no doubt level charges of idolatry against the followers of Jesus because no true follower of Jesus will ever deny Him.

“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.”
–Matthew 10:32-33

Meanwhile, TRUE idols are everywhere in society: they often only lack the name of idol.

Even those who are skilled at entertaining (‘stars’) are called “idols.”

What does the reader think of all of those who slobber and drool at the latest pronouncement of a scientist or a medical “expert“?

The idol acid test goes something like this: what does one put their faith in?

Instead of trusting God and putting their faith in Jesus, men trust OTHER THINGS.

If one has put his faith in guns, guns are his idol.

If one has put his faith in good government, then good government is an idol.

If one puts his faith in survival skills, then those skills are a form of idolatry.

Idols are EVERYWHERE in modern times and the people are MAD about their idols.

EVEN IF they call them something else.

And just because one admits that his idol has a few cracks in it, does NOT mean worship of that idol is NOT taking place.

One does not have to build an elaborate shrine to be an idol worshiper.

HAS the reader felt uneasy about events which are happening–or are likely to happen in the future?

HAS the reader put his faith in things he can see or touch to “get him through” those coming tough times?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?
