Does the Reader Know What the Gospel of Jesus Christ Even Says?

“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
—-John 20:31

One of the most surprising–and SHOCKING–discoveries made during the last series of visits to the churches was that so very FEW of those who regularly congregate there knew what the gospel of Jesus Christ was about.

For a folk whose ENTIRE SYSTEM is based on BELIEVING THE GOSPEL, this was totally shocking BECAUSE how can one believe if one doesn’t know the ONE THING one is SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE?

Oh, the church folk–and ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HANG OUT IN THE PULPITS–talk ABOUT the gospel a great deal.

But

But PREACH the gospel–as per one of Jesus’ last commands to his disciples?

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
–Mark 16:15

That’s just not happening.

Counterfeit Churches: Do Not Know the Gospel, Can’t Preach It

In fact, those who inhabit the pulpits of America’s churches WILL NOT preach the gospel.

Some shout about the gospel: “We have to have the gospel!  That’s all there is to it!”

Some will construct BEAUTIFUL word pictures about the gospel: “If your life was  like riding in an airplane and someone opened the door and threw you out, the gospel is your ULTIMATE PARACHUTE!”

Some offer an endless array of other gospels and alternatives to the gospel which SOUND GOOD–but they are NOT the gospel: discipleship, ABCs of Salvation, Roman Road to Salvation, etc.

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
–Galatians 1:8-9

One man–who was a graduate of a Bible college–even insisted that John 3:16 was the gospel!

“Sure it is!  Believe John 3:16 and you’ll go to heaven!”

Maybe.

Maybe not.

God’s Word does NOT say that John 3:16 is the power of God unto salvation.  God’s Word says the gospel of Jesus Christ is.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

The gospel is VERY simple–so it is even MORE shocking that more are NOT so well acquainted with it.

There are basically three parts to the gospel.

  1. Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.
  2. Jesus Christ was then buried and rose again the third day, ALSO according to the Scriptures.
  3. After his resurrection, Jesus was seen by his apostles, over 500 believers and lastly, by the apostle Paul.

And that’s basically it.

Pretty simple, huh?

BUT if one asks the average church-goer, one gets miles of explanations (and plenty of hemming and hawing).

But NO gospel.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is a dividing line.  It FORCES those who hear it to make a choice.

Either one believes it OR one does NOT.

One makes a choice and then one has to LIVE with the consequences of that choice.

OF COURSE, if one never hears the gospel, and doesn’t know the gospel, then one cannot make a choice.

Does the reader know what the gospel even says?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.”
–-1 Corinthians 15:1-8REACH
