Will Modern Love Survive the End Times?

Modern Love which Isn't

There have been more than one piece written in these pages about the various aspects of that affliction we call “modern love.”

Which led to some recent thoughts about whether the modern version of LOVE ( which we hear so much about it in pop songs, TV shows and movies) will survive the calamities and chaos of the end times.

Which led to passing some of those thoughts along to readers.

1- As has been mentioned MORE THAN ONCE in these pages, the MODERN version of love is quite DIFFERENT than what is traditionally thought of as LOVE.

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
–1Corinthians 13:4-8,13

Referring to 1Corinthians Chapter 13, Family Bible Notes explains: “Charity; love to God and to men.”

So when the apostle Paul refers to “charity,” he is referring to what many moderns refer to as “love.”

HOWEVER, the love described by Paul in 1st Corinthians verses 4-8 bears little resemblance to the emotion moderns describe as “love.”

2- MODERN LOVE is all about the person who is “in love”: THEIR feelings, THEIR disappointments, THEIR let-downs, THEIR plans and, most of all, how the other person is affecting THEIR life–usually in a NEGATIVE way.

LOVE, as set forth in God’s Word, is all about the OTHER PERSON.

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”

LOVE, as set forth in God’s Word–as opposed to pop culture–DOES NOT KEEP SCORE.

3- It should be pointed out that ‘jealousy’ is NOT love or (in ANY form) a part of love. It is a type of fear: a fear of losing what one person considered to be their property, their possession.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
–1JOHN 4:18

As a sort of example, we offer the claims one young lady once insisted were correct.

“My boyfriend LOVES his new truck.

“Let me tell you, my boyfriend loves his new truck MORE than he loves his mama.

“And he’s told me (more than once) that he ‘loves me like he loves that truck.'”

But after it was pointed out that

1- Her boyfriend OWNS his new truck–and has the papers to prove it. Does he also OWN his very insistent girlfriend?

2- If her boyfriend ever wrecked his new truck, he would just buy a new one. He would get over it: he would just replace the banged-up one with another one; a newer, more shiny model. Is this the kind of relationship you are in?

The girl then (after some initial protests) grew thoughtful–and quiet.

JEALOUSY is NOT love.

It is a display of fear: a fear of losing what one considers to be their PROPERTY.

4- REGARDLESS of what many well-promoted pop singers would have the reader believe: LOVE is NOT about suffering.

LOVE is about happiness, mostly coming from a devotion to another.

LOVE overcomes suffering: LOVE does NOT cause suffering.

5- REGARDLESS of what many well-promoted pop singers would have the reader believe: LOVE is NOT when one person is ‘in love’ with someone who exhibits little interest in them.

IF the other person does not demonstrate the SAME level of intensity of feeling that the person who is ‘in love’ demonstrates, then the person who insists they are ‘in love’ is likely feeling SOMETHING: obsession, compulsion, possessiveness, second thoughts–SOMETHING, but NOT love.

6- Modern love usually involves a LOT of planning.

This planning takes the place of what those who are REALLY in love do.

During all of the ‘plans,’ it becomes clear that NOTHING is more important than the plans.

NOT the other person’s ideas.

NOT the other person’s thoughts.

NOT the other person’s feelings.

What IS important is ‘the plans’ “they” are making for their future.

7- The end times will be a time which tests that which most call “LOVE.“

A GREAT MANY who believe they are “in love” will find that they do NOT have what they thought they had.

Some will discover that they are involved in a sort of business relationship–rather than LOVE.

Others will learn that they are involved, NOT in love, but in something else; perhaps a pleasing social arrangement OR a sort of two-person discussion club OR a mutual admiration/mutual support group OR a public art project which others admire and compliment.

NOW, none of those things are not necessarily bad–BUT, they are NOT LOVE.

And HOW will such details be discovered about MODERN LOVE in the end times?

In the same way that people have almost always come by this hard information: one person will notice that the other is VERY concerned about their OWN well-being–and NOT very concerned at all about their partner’s.

And so, while the traditional version of LOVE will, not only survive, but will THRIVE in the chaos and calamities of the end times.

The modern, plastic version of LOVE–which is the version promoted so ceaselessly by pop culture and entertainment–won’t fare so well.

IN FACT, the end times will be a sort of proving ground for LOVE.

Those lucky enough to be involved in TRUE, traditional LOVE, will come through the end times knowing EXACTLY what they have.

While those who are involved in MODERN LOVE will come through the end times knowing what they have, as well.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

IS the reader ‘in love’?

WHAT makes the reader so sure of this ‘love’?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?

DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation
