Why Is It That Satan Does What Satan Does?

Sin and Slavery

“And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.”
–Luke 10:18

As one grows older, the number of occasions where someone asks a question which strikes the listener as COMPLETELY NEW grows more and more rare.

HOWEVER, someone recently asked a question which was a champion in the Novel Question Department.

“Why is Satan evil?  I mean, he knows that God is going to win, so why does he stay at it even though he knows he’s going to lose?

At the time the question was posed, the answer given was a quote from the entertaining 1997 movie, The Devil’s Advocate.

In the movie, Keanu Reeves plays the role of the devil’s son (of which he was totally unaware until he moved to New York City and began working for his dad).  Al Pacino plays John Milton, who is Satan, the devil, the dragon.

(Pacino gets some really juicy lines in this one, by the way.)

In the movie, Keanu Reeves discovers his father is the devil and is not taking it well.

So Satan dishes a little devilish happy-talk.

“I’m here on the ground with my nose in it since the whole thing began! I’ve nurtured every sensation man has been inspired to have. I cared about what he wanted and I never judged him. Why? Because I never rejected him—in spite of all his imperfections, I’m a fan of man! I’m a humanist. Maybe the last humanist. Who, in their right mind, Kevin, could possibly deny the 20th century was entirely mine? All of it, Kevin! All of it. Mine. I’m peaking, Kevin. It’s my time now. It’s our time.”

After his father goes off on how well he and evil are doing, an inconvenient fact is brought up.

In the Bible you lose. We’re destined to lose dad.”

To which his father, the devil, replies:

Well consider the source son.”

And this was basically the answer given at the time the question was asked.

Satan slyly discredits the truth of God’s Word without ever raising an objection or delivering a speech.

Well consider the source son.”

Actually, what Satan is REALLY doing is asking the other person in the conversation to dismiss God’s Word.  Ninety-nine out of one hundred moderns most likely would not have ANY problems doing just exactly that.

NOW, in the meantime, there are other points to be raised about why Satan does what he does.

1- Satan is probably the most vain being that ever was.  He continues doing his thing because he thinks he’s better than God.

Does he know he loses in the end?

Probably–but he also probably believes he can weasel his way out of any difficulties which would arise.

2- Satan is a fantastic liar.

Whenever Satan is facing a human being, he is able to out-talk and out-maneuver mere mortals.

With God, it is a VERY different situation.  As detailed in God’s Word (Job), Satan is careful to keep a civil tongue in his head when interacting with God.

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.”
–Job 1:6-11

3- Satan–though he is not human–most likely is a creature of habit.

And, for centuries, Satan’s habits have all had houses on the wrong side of the street.

Satan’s habits are evil, wicked and foolish.

Satan is a liar, not out of necessity, but because he LIKES to lie, thinking it enables him to get a leg up on anyone else.

And those are the main reasons Satan does what he does.

Short of asking the father of lies himself.

And then,IF one TOTALLY deceived, one should have severe doubts as to whether the devil was being truthful.

At any rate:

There are others reasons, and–God willing–those other reasons will be explored in the near future.

DOES the reader believe in Satan?

WHAT does the reader believe?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?

DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
-–Romans 1:16
