IF You Do Not Know the Gospel, You Are NOT a Christian

gospel

The gospel (‘good news’) of Jesus Christ is CENTRAL to Christianity.

IN FACT, it could be argued that Christianity REVOLVES around the gospel.

So, with that being true, why is it that many (most) of those who inhabit the buildings we call “churches” DO NOT KNOW THE GOSPEL?

Several years ago, a man who was a graduate of a Bible college tried to claim that John 3:16 was the gospel!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

“That’s John 3:16!  That’s NOT the gospel!”

“Sure it is!”

“NO!  It most definitely is NOT!  It’s a great Bible verse, but it’s NOT the gospel!”

“Okay, what do YOU think the gospel is?”

It was at this point the man was pointed to 1CORINTHIANS 15:1-8.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8

* Why is it so SHOCKING that most church folk do NOT know the gospel?

Because the last command of Jesus Christ before He ascended to heaven was to preach the gospel.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
–Mark 16: 15-16

** Why is it so SHOCKING that most church folk do NOT know the gospel?

Because the gospel of Jesus Christ is central to the faith that they CLAIM to have.

*** Why is it so SHOCKING that most church folk do NOT know the gospel?

Because anyone who does NOT know the gospel is NOT even a Christian.

As it pertains to the last command of Jesus Christ, how can one preach what one does NOT know?

Now, KNOWING the gospel does not guarantee anyone a place in heaven. (There are several heathens of a personal acquaintance who know the gospel–which is more than MOST church folk.)

The church folk hear ABOUT the gospel, but since churches REFUSE to preach the gospel, the church folk do NOT even know what it is.

It bears repeating:

IF you do NOT know the gospel, you are NOT even a Christian.

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve shown up at the pot luck Wednesday night meetings with your favorite dish…

It does NOT matter how often you show up at on Sundays at the church building…

It does NOT matter how nice you are to others…

IF you do NOT know that gospel, you are NOT a Christian.

And that is sad beyond belief.

DOES the reader know the gospel?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

A Winding Conversation Can Often Cover a LOT of Territory

When one begins a discussion, one often does NOT know where that discussion will go, lead to OR wind up.

And so it was that a recent discussion started nowhere in particular, COVERED A LOT OF TOPICS and ended up nowhere in particular.

Very often, such conversations will hold the interest of all parties involved (this particular conversation involved TWO people) as long as the discussion lasts OR as long as the time allows before other matters intrude.

The discussion began on a trip to a local Walmart and the opening topics included WHAT WAS TO BE PURCHASED BY EACH PERSON and WHY.

It then moved onto something completely different: Is toothpaste an insidious scheme designed to gradually destroy the teeth of all who use it?  This particular topic was a continuation of a subject that had been touched upon a few weeks earlier.  One of the participants in that earlier conversation has done a little research and was sharing it.

“I looked it up.  Most toothpaste has baking soda in it and baking soda is an abrasive!”

“For sure.  In fact, toothpaste is used as a household cleaner in many instances. So, here’s a question for you: WHY is an abrasive (which wears the protective coating of enamel off of teeth) pushed so hard by the authorities–including the educational ones?”

7 Things You Can Clean With Toothpaste (Besides Your Teeth)

“Maybe baking soda is a lot cheaper than anything else they could use?”

“I don’t think it has anything to do with price–but I can’t say that for sure.”

The conversation THEN moved on to what Americans eat and drink every day AND the effects of that food and drink on their health.

This segment of the conversation began with a George Carlin quote.

“Let me get a sip of water here… you figure this stuff is safe to drink? [Audience yells “NO!”] Actually, I don’t care, I drink it anyway. You know why? Because I’m an American and I expect a little cancer in my food and water. I’m a loyal American and I’m not happy unless I let government and industry poison me a little bit every day.”

Then it moved to food products which other countries BAN their citizens from eating or drinking which America tells its people: “C’mon, what are you scared of?  A little cancer never hurt anyone!”

And as the car pulled into the Walmart parking lot, the discussion was JUST BEGINNING on whether there is ANY actual meat in a fast food hamburger.

Again, some conversations: neither person can tell where they will end up.

But, some conversations cover a LOT of ground whether or not anyone knows where they might lead.

HAS the reader ever been a party to a winding conversation?

WAS the reader–if ever it happened–able to extract any useful information from such a discussion?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Can the Believer Be Deceived?

DECEPTION IN THE CHURCH: Do not be deceived.

Can a believer be deceived?

This was a question which has surfaced from time to time over the years–both as a heathen and as a believer.

FIRST, as a heathen, the answer would have to be “Yes, of course the believer can be deceived.  The believer is man and man is a very tempting target for the deception of others.”

BUT, this is most likely what ALL non-believers would say: after all, they have NO experience with God’s Holy Spirit, which Jesus said leads the believer into ALL truth.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
–John 16:13

There once was a new believer who was deceived for a VERY SHORT while.  Afterwards, this believer wondered, “How did that happen?  The Holy Spirit is supposed to guide me into all truth?!!?”

Later, the person realized that Jesus said the Holy Spirit would “guide you into all truth.”

Jesus did NOT say, “The Holy Spirit will FORCE you into all truth.”

The believer has to learn to LISTEN to the Spirit.  IF the Spirit guides the believer to the truth and the believer do NOT accept that truth–OR has his OWN ideas what the truth is–then there may be some short-term deception UNTIL the believer learns to follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, there will be NO lasting deception.

God’s Holy Spirit is VERY insistent and His guidance keeps getting louder and louder–until the believer can no longer ignore the truth.

So, having the Holy Spirit as a promise of God will almost certainly prevent the believer from running astray FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME.

ALSO in the believer’s favor are TWO Bible verses.

The first is John 16:13 (which has already been addressed).

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
–John 16:13

The second is Matthew 24:24.

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

Though MANY false teachers have done their best to corrupt Matthew 24:24, the meaning of the verse is CLEAR: it is not possible to deceive the very elect of God.

False prophets (including the man of sin) shall do GREAT WONDERS and SIGNS.

The false ones will operate under a GREAT cloud of deception.

False Christs (including the man of sin) will deceive the WHOLE WORLD–except for those who are believers.

“And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”True believers: followers of Jesus Christ.
–Revelation 13:8

Who is it that is written in the Lamb’s book of life?

True believers: followers of Jesus Christ.

In addition, there are a NUMBER of Bible verses informing the reader that God will protect the believer from SIN WHICH WOULD CONDEMN HIM.

And God’s protection is a sure thing.

One last thing: Jesus Himself said that all (the followers) that the Father gave Him, He (Jesus) would not lose ANY.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
–John 10:27-28

Did the reader catch that?

Jesus said the His believers/followers would NEVER perish.

SO, no, the believer cannot be deceived.

Particularly AFTER the believer learns to listen to God’s Holy Spirit within.

HAS the reader EVER thought about deception and where that usually leads a person?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
