Favor vs Mercy

hand of God

favor:

Goodwill; benevolent regard.

(The Merit Myth: How Our Colleges Favor the Rich and Divide America)

Mercy:

Instances of forbearance or forgiveness

A great many are struck with confusion when the topic turns to “mercy” and “favor.”

There is a simple way to distinguish between FAVOR and MERCY–particularly when referring to God and His treatment of man.

FAVOR usually involves some merit–however small–on the part of the one who is favored.

MERCY involves NO merit on the part of the one upon whom mercy is shown.

When God shows a person MERCY, He does so SOLELY at His pleasure, NOT because the person did anything to “earn” God’s favor.

“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
–Romans 9:15-16

Man does NOT do ANYTHING to “earn” God’s MERCY: God’s mercy is dispensed as however it pleases God.

IN FACT, at one time, “mercy” was defined–particularly in the churches–as “unmerited favor.”

The one SMALL group who have no problems with the concepts of “mercy” and “favor” are those who have been born again.

IF NOT FOR the MERCY of God–God’s unmerited, undeserved, unlooked-for favor–this small group would STILL be ignorant pagans.

Those who have experienced the transformation KNOW they are the recipients of God’s MERCY (grace).

Otherwise, they would still be ignorant heathens.

And well deserving of God’s wrath.

“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ”
–1THESSALONIANS 5:9

DOES the reader have ANY confusion about MERCY and FAVOR?

DOES the reader understand that God’s MERCY is showered upon the otherwise-undeserving?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Modern Stories and Other Lies

“God is not a man, that he should lie”
–Numbers 23:19

ALL men lie.

Which is ONE of the reasons ALL men need a savior, as NO liar will EVER (after Satan is expelled for good) enter heaven.

“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.”
–Revelation 22:14-15

One of the most common ways for end times man to lie is by repeating the stories he tells other men.

Here’s a TIP for the reader.

One can KNOW he is being told a story (lie) IF the story keeps CHANGING to fit the changing circumstance of the events of the story.

It is impossible for a liar to foresee all of the lies needed to shore up his initial story.  Therefore, even ACCOMPLISHED liars are required to change their stories–usually while smiling and talking fast.

IT MATTERS LITTLE HOW MANY TIMES THE STORY WAS TOLD.

When the story changes, it is a story–FOR THE TRUTH NEVER CHANGES.

CAN the reader think of any stories he has been told during the past year which have changed–sometimes, significantly?

DOES the reader believe that the truth changes due to updates, better information, new research or 101 other reasons given for changing a story (lie)?

A Few Thoughts on Comfort Food

comfort food

comfort food:

1 Food, often high in carbohydrates or sugar, consumed to feel comfort or alleviate stress rather than to receive nutrition.

2 Simple, comforting home-cooked–style food associated with one’s formative years, often a staple of diners and other informal restaurants.

There seem to be a number of folks who put a great deal of stock these days in COMFORT FOOD.

COMFORT FOOD seems to be those food items which are consumed to bring the consumer a kind of comfort. Not the sort of comfort one gets when their mother puts her arms around you and says, “There, there.  It will be alright.”  But as a sort of substitute for your mom.

The foods are many and wondrous.

Some sing the praises of pancakes and maple syrup.

Some say that strawberry shortcake (or ANY shortcake with ANY berries) can’t be beat.

Others swear by cookies and milk.

And so, while on the topic several days ago, a few thoughts formed about those items on the menu which are called COMFORT FOODS.

1- Comfort is in the eye of the beholder.

What brings one person comfort may repel another.

What one finds disgusting is that in which another finds comfort and joy.

Not too long ago, someone claimed, “I could eat a whole pot of hot, buttered cauliflower!  I love it!”

Meanwhile, the person behind them was making a nasty-looking face–to register their silent disagreement.

Cookies, candies, pastries and pies may soothe one person while another might be turned off by the mere thought of sweets.

So, the food that one may head to for comfort may NOT be the choice of others.

2- Comfort is often NOT.

The whole idea of eating comfort food is that by downing something one finds appealing, one finds consolation and solace for his woes.

Little thought is apparently devoted to those unpleasant conditions caused by eating.

Indigestion, heartburn, upset stomach, diarrhea, sour stomach: almost all woes which involve the stomach are brought about by EATING.

This includes the EATING of comfort foods.

Not a lot of comfort to be found when one is throwing up.

3- Food MAY offer a sort of VERY temporary, physical comfort.

Food is a VERY temporary fix and when the effects of the food wear off–no matter how much one really LOVES that food–the problem which caused that person to seek out comfort food is STILL there.

For a longer lasting remedy to life’s ups and downs, the reader might want to try SINCERE (as opposed to the hi-and-bye ‘quickie’ variety) of PRAYER.

Even the heathen have good things to say about reading God’s Word when one is upset. As one nonbeliever put it,

“I like reading Psalms. They calm me down when I’m upset.”

Comfort food comes and goes and SOMETIMES something tastes better than others.

BUT, a good talk with God or His Son, Jesus Christ, only gets better the more one does it.

Besides, IF the reader begins utilizing prayer, then he may decide to skip that next stack of bacon-and-cinnamon-covered blueberry waffles.

Once again, we offer the BEST Bible verse which has to do with eating–and IF honey (or sweets) is the reader’s comfort food, then the reader is in luck: he will see something BIBLICAL about his favorite comforting food.

“Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.”

DOES the reader have a comfort food?

DOES the food give comfort to the reader when he is upset?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
