Dollar Stores

Occasionally, a small group of people will happen upon a topic which NONE later remember how that subject became the object of a conversation.

And so it was that recently, the topic of DOLLAR STORES was discussed.

HOWEVER the topic began, there were a few points of general agreement on the phenomena that is the DOLLAR STORE in America.

1- Dollar stores have multiplied at a rapid rate in the USA.

Perhaps this is because of the rapidly-rising prices in America.  Although the government/media has only IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS acknowledged this mushrooming INFLATION, it has been going on for YEARS–as ANYONE who has shopped for groceries (or anything else, for that matter) knew.

Maybe DOLLAR STORES spread across the fruited plain because that is MOSTLY what Americans have had left to spend: DOLLARS.

As in ONE dollar.

Instead of twenty or fifty or hundred-dollars.

It appears that every town, village and city in America has a DOLLAR STORE–or two or three or ten.

We found growing evidence that the growth of dollar stores is not merely a byproduct of economic distress. These chains are a cause of it.

Who knew?

A place that sells for prices the person buying can afford is the CAUSE of higher prices elsewhere?

Again, who knew?

2- Although some DOLLAR STORES sell EVERYTHING in the store at one price point (one dollar), the careful shopper can find a few of those items elsewhere for LESS THAN A DOLLAR.

Not many and not so very much cheaper–but, there are a few items which are cheaper at other places than the DOLLAR STORES.

3- Although about a decade or so ago, there were LOTS of small, independently-owned DOLLAR STORES, over the past several years DOLLAR STORES have  basically boiled down to THREE brands.

Dollar Tree (where all merchandise is for sale at one dollar), Dollar General (where the items for sale can cost up to $25 dollars) and Family Dollar (which is owned by Dollar Tree).

4- Going to a DOLLAR STORE is often not only just a shopping experience.

Sometimes, customers have expressed going to DOLLAR STORES as a sort of ‘bargain-hunting’ excursion.

“I show up at my local store two or three times a week. It’s like going to a yard sale! You never know what you’ll find!”

Except at a yard sale, there’s a fairly good chance one will find a used pair of pants for 25 cents.

5- DOLLAR STORES are particularly well-stocked with cleaning and food items, as well as various  knick-knacks.

As the value of a U.S. dollar has GREATLY declined over the past 10-15 years, a dollar buys LESS. And–contrary to what the reader may be told by the government/media, LESS is NOT more: LESS is LESS.

Therefore, the range of products sold at DOLLAR STORES has narrowed quite a bit.

6- DOLLAR STORES seem to be the logical progression of (what used to be called) ‘5-and-dimes.’

Classic Five-and-Dime Stores From Yesterday and Today

Woolworth’s, Murphy’s and McCrory’s were the leading 5-and-10-cent chains of yesteryear.

Of course, this was back when a nickel or dime was worth a nickel or dime.

7- There was some discussion on whether the various COVID-19 rules and regulations would help or hurt DOLLAR STORES.

Some felt they would HURT dollar stores because, if customers were forced to live under strict rules of movement and contact, they might skip DOLLAR STORES and head to larger stores instead.

Others felt that, as incomes went lower and restrictions increased, people would turn to DOLLAR STORES to help make ends conveniently meet.

There was some DISAGREEMENT on whether DOLLAR STORES would survive the trends seen in today’s American economy.

Some wondered if DOLLAR STORES could survive if a dollar was only worth 10 cents.

Others felt, what better place to shop than a DOLLAR STORE–no matter what a dollar was worth.

What does the reader believe?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
