“How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.”
–Proverbs 6:9-11
It has been claimed that “man is a creature of habit.”
IN FACT, pointing out this obvious idiosyncrasy of man might be the ONLY reason the name G. STANLEY HALL is known today.
“Man is largely a creature of habit, and many of his activities are more or less automatic reflexes from the stimuli of his environment.”
–G. Stanley Hall
Of course, Hall (who made his living as both a psychologist and an educator)–as well as other men–along with God’s Word, was most likely referring to the UNDESIRABLE routine behaviors men call “habits.”
God’s Word is largely silent about these little building blocks of behavior which make up so much of LIFE.
What God’s Word DOES have to say is largely confined to the bad habits which make up what are generally referred to as “laziness” or “sloth.”
Over-eating (gluttony), as well as indulging in wine and/or strong drink are also habits mentioned in the Bible.
“For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”
–Proverbs 23:21
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
–Proverbs 20:1
Those self-destructive behaviors in which men regularly partake are mostly called “sin” in the Bible.
They are not called “bad habits” or some other phrase used by man.
And so, men–as well as God’s Word–have little to say about GOOD HABITS.
Maybe it is because men so rarely fall into behaviors others (or God) judge to be “GOOD“?
Maybe it is because OTHER MEN can see the damage these behaviors cause the men who DO indulge in such (usually) self-destructive behaviors (BAD HABITS)?
“All my brother wants to do is drink beer! When he dies, they’ll probably find a beer can in his hand.”
“She likes her weed! She’ll probably be firing one up at her funeral!”
Maybe it because the MEN WHO INDULGE IN THESE (MOSTLY) SELF-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIORS can see the damage caused by their own actions?
“These cigarettes are KILLING me!”
“I’m in a hole! I gotta get a handle on all of this spending!”
Habits.
They are so common.
EVERYONE has them–mostly those of the “BAD” variety.
Perhaps that is because more factors are at work in man engaging in these (usually) self-destructive little behaviors than the world lets on?
Perhaps that is why bad habits sometimes appear IMPOSSIBLE to ‘break’?
How often do we hear a person complain that they have to “change their ways” when referring to one of their BAD HABITS?
Yet, BAD habits seem to be like the weather: men TALK A LOT about those little bits of daily routine, BUT when it comes time to take action…
…That’s usually quite different than the talk.
DOES the reader have a BAD HABIT he’d like to drop?
DOES the reader have any HABITS which he wishes he could better control?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
