The Soul

soul

Not a lot of information about the SOUL has been previously published in these pages.

And after some searching, some research and some more searching, it was discovered that what is written on the Internet is a) not very helpful, mostly; b) in many cases is pure speculation; speculation which contradicts what is written elsewhere; and, c) worst of all, what is written sometimes contradicts what little is written in God’s Word.

So, by relying on God’s Word, here is some information about something that is talked about a LOT–but which not much is actually KNOWN FOR SURE: the soul.

1- There seems to be a LOT of confusion about the SOUL and the SPIRIT.

At least–judging by what one finds by using the search engines–what is written down often confuses the SOUL and the SPIRIT.

SOME websites plainly contradict what the Bible says, while others recommend reading books by pagan authors to better understand this concept of Christianity. So much had to be waded through in the effort to find ANYTHING useful for this piece.

At the end of the day: confusion reigned.

2- What about the SOUL? What about the SPIRIT?

Many equate the SOUL with some sort of God-given life force.

After much searching, the following was, by far, the best info on the topic we uncovered.

BUT, it still left a LOT to be desired.

The Hebrew word translated “soul” means a breathing creature, one in which life is present, whether physical life or mental life. The Greek word in the New Testament is similar. In its most basic sense, the word “soul” means “life,” either physical or eternal. Jesus asks what it profits a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul, referring to his eternal life (Matthew 16:26). Both Old and New Testaments reiterate that we are to love God completely, with the whole “soul” which refers to everything that is in us that makes us alive (Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Mark 12:30). Whenever the word “soul” is used, it can refer to the whole person, whether physically alive or in the afterlife.
What is the Difference Between soul and spirit?

This can be easily checked as the Bible does refers to the living as ‘SOULS.’

It ALSO refers to those in Heaven as ‘SOULS.’

However, just when you think that ‘soul’ means ‘life,’ (whether in this life or the next)–as was claimed in the quoted passage–Revelation 6:9-10 makes one wonder what “the souls of them that were slain for the word of God” means? The verse hints that the soul is MORE than just life itself.

“And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?”
–Revelation 6:9-10

3JOHN 1:2 provokes the same questions.

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

And what, exactly, was the apostle Peter referring to when he wrote 1PETER 2:11?

One supposes that it is possible for ‘fleshly lusts’ to ‘war against ‘life,’ but it seems that Peter is hinting that the SOUL is something else: a separate entity; a part of man about which little is known for sure.

“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul”

Genesis also raises the same questions–although Genesis 35:18 COULD be seen as supporting both sides of the matter.

“And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.”
–Genesis 35:18

At any rate, here are some verses which support the ‘soul = life’ claim.

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
–Genesis 2:7

“Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.”
–Exodus 12:19

“And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.”
–Revelation 16:3

3- There are a LOT of claims that ‘soul’ and ‘spirit’ are used interchangeably in God’s Word.

Ecclesiastes gives a bit of information on this topic.

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
–Ecclesiastes 12:7

Nothing about a man’s soul.

4- The Catholic Church teaches that the soul is a sort of godly bean-counting sin accountant, which needs cleansing (mostly using the ‘sacraments’ of the Catholic Church) from time to time.  It is the soul which is “stained” by sin.

To understand the Church’s teaching on our cleansing in purgatory, it is first necessary to understand sin and its effects, since purgatory has the purpose of purifying us from our sins. Those who die with no stain of sin on their souls, such as baptized babies, go straight to heaven when they die.
Purification of the Soul Here or Hereafter

The Catholic Church tells a great many tales, but one of the most enduring is the story they tell about “purgatory.”

To believing Catholics, purgatory is like a mini-hell which lets you loose after you burn for awhile.

As one Catholic priest put it

So Purgatory is like having a great heavenly shower and getting rid of all that stuff that’s there. So when I die, I won’t go straight to heaven first; I will go to Purgatory first and get cleansed.

Just as I would not have dreamed of allowing Sheila to see me in the state I was in when I left work in my father’s slaughterhouse, I would not dream of allowing Jesus to see me until that cleansing. When I meet Jesus face to face for the first time, I want to be purified – with a soul that is shining.
Purging the Stain of Sin

May Catholics LIKE the story of purgatory because it gives them hope that they will EVENTUALLY go to heaven. The trade-off between some sin in this life and burning for awhile in the fire of purgatory, seems to be a fair one in their eyes.

Purgatory–like so many other of that church’s teachings–is a CLEAR contradiction of what God’s Word says on the matter.

OF COURSE, God’s Word is COMPLETELY silent on the tale of ‘purgatory.’

The Catholic Church appears to also teach that the “soul” and the “spirit” are basically the same thing.

The glossary at the back of the U.S. version of the Catechism of the Catholic Church defines “soul” as follows:

The spiritual principle of human beings. The soul is the subject of human consciousness and freedom; soul and body together form one unique human nature. Each human soul is individual and immortal, immediately created by God. The soul does not die with the body, from which it is separated by death, and with which it will be reunited in the final resurrection.

[…]

In Sacred Scripture the term “soul” often refers to human life or the entire human person. But “soul” also refers to the innermost.aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him, that by which he is most especially in God’s image: “Soul” signifies the spiritual principle in man.
What exactly is a soul?

According to the official Catholic teaching, the ways a person can cleanse their souls of minor sins:

  • The sacrament of confession
  • Worthy reception of Communion
  • Sincere act of contrition
  • Penance
  • Fasting
  • Almsgiving

Venial Sin Forgiveness?

5- Although it is not wrong to refer to the SOUL as ‘life,’–God’s Word does it on occasion–there appears to be more to it than that.  The SOUL appears to be part of man–like the spirit–although God’s Word does not say exactly what the differences between a SOUL and SPIRIT are.

The differences between the temporal, more easily-observed BODY and the ‘harder-to-pin-down’ SOUL (and SPIRIT) are obvious.  HOWEVER, there is something about the topic of SOUL which seems to unleash the poetic speculation in man.

Some have claimed that the soul is what makes a person uniquely their own.

That the SOUL is one’s personality.

BUT, so much of one’s ‘personality’ in this life is shaped by misinformation and sin.

SO, at the very least, it appears one’s personality needs a bit of cleaning–and maybe a bit of updating as well.

And so, at the end of the day, it appears that MUCH MORE study will have to go into the SOUL.

And THAT is not merely speculation.

[NOTE: For all readers who are both inquisitive and have a few minutes, this seems to be a most worthy field of study.]

HAS the reader EVER thought about exactly what the soul is?

It is not YET too late: there is still a little time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Superstition and Second Chances

superstition

One seeming surety of many is that “IF ONLY he (or she or it) had a second chance, he (or she or it) would choose differently.

BUT, is this true?

OR rather, is this true for many UNBELIEVERS?

As professional atheist CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS’ son once wrote

On the deathbed conversion – I spent my father’s final weeks and days at his bedside and watched him draw his final breath and die, and can assure you that there was no hint of any sort of conversion (as I’m sure you have already guessed). In fact, we barely spoke about religion at all except for joint expressions of frustration at the god botherers who made the rounds in the ICU and other units where dying people could be preyed upon by vulturous Christians.
Deathbed conversion? Never. Christopher Hitchens was defiant to the last

OF COURSE, the reader should remember that it is much easier for the living to put convenient words into the mouths of those who have passed on than it was for those suffering to have uttered them.

One of the enduring stories told by unbelievers is the one about the brave, noble atheist who stared his own uncertainty about his eternity in the face and spit upon any chance he might change his tune.

MORE: Deathbed Conversions: Another Tall Tale?

So, the opportunity for a second chance; the opportunity to change one’s mind and reap the benefits (or degradation) from that change appear to be OVER-STATED–at least as far as those who are firmly committed to their particular superstition.

Even when staring eternal judgment and condemnation in the face, MANY unbelievers steadfastly refuse (as a matter of principle?) to change their minds about their adopted attitudes and superstitions.

It is imagined that the ONLY thing which MIGHT change the mind of the committed nonbeliever is an eternity of torment.

Maybe.

It is also imagined that the COMMITTED atheist-of-principle, upon being released from a sentence of eternal torment, exclaims, “See?  I knew it was not real.  I knew God didn’t exist and that there was NO eternal consequences for my actions.”

Perhaps this is why God’s Word paints the picture of end times unbelievers who–face-to-face with God’s judgment and given the choice between repentance for their actions and judgment–choose the judgment.

“And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.”
–Revelation 16:9

“And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”
–Revelation 9:20-21

“And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.”
–Revelation 16:10-11

“And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.”
–Revelation 16:21

End times men act as Job’s wife famously put it:

“Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.”
–Job 2:9

According to God’s Word, the men who dwell upon the earth during the last days are almost ALL committed to suffering, blaspheming God for their judgment and remaining steadfastly anti-God to the very end.

It reminds one of those infamous posters and T-shirts from the 1960’s: The Last Great Act of Defiance.

Will man REALLY change his mind about his superstitions if given a second chance?

It appears that the more HEAVILY-INDOCTRINATED will not.

Maybe it’s a matter of PRIDE?

Pride is a sin.

Or maybe, the men of the last days FIRMLY BELIEVE John Milton’s trope:

“Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven.”

WHAT does the reader believe about second chances?

It is not YET too late: there is still a little time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Science is Settled?

A phrase which is much used and BELOVED–especially by those who fancy themselves to be well-informed about such things–is, “The science is settled.”

This phrase is employed as a sort of pronouncement of FINALITY on a subject.

Particularly if the subject being discussed is ‘climate change.’

The science is settled.

Satan’s Mouthpiece (the Corporate Media) particularly adores this phrase.  Their adoration is shown in how often they use it to in an attempt to persuade others to their point of view.

Of course, scientists themselves are quick to point out that the ‘science is NEVER settled’–otherwise, many a beautiful-sounding ‘scientific theory’ would paint itself into a corner and NEVER get out.

Science is a collection of stories purporting to explain why things are the way things are.

Like any stories, it is NECESSARY that the storyteller have the latitude to CHANGE the story when inconvenient facts are raised which shed doubt on what he is saying.

CHANGING the STORY is an IMPORTANT part of SCIENCE!

Therefore, the science is NEVER settled: it is taught as the truth UNTIL it is not believed by many and then the story is CHANGED.

Something to keep in mind the next time the reader hears the phrase “The science is settled.”

Like ALL of those who traffic in stories, science needs its ‘wiggle room.’

HAS the reader EVER used the phrase “The science is settled“?

It is not YET too late: there is still a little time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
