Whether the conman promises worldly riches, easy money or ‘something for nothing,’ the conman offers his victim HOPE–MOSTLY of the false variety.
HOPE for material gain without material pain.
HOPE for the victim’s future.
HOPE for a better tomorrow based on following the conman’s directives today.
It is commonly said, “You can’t cheat an honest man.” But the con artist’s toolbox includes more than just playing on the victim’s GREED. Those who employ confidence tricks traffic in HOPE, using false hope to unlock human frailty.
Confidence tricks exploit typical human characteristics such as compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, desperation, greed, vanity, opportunism, lust and naïvety. As such, there is no consistent profile of a confidence trick victim; the common factor is simply that the victim relies on the good faith of the con artist.
The scientist mostly plows the same ground.
Offering HOPE if the victim follows the advice of the scientist.
Predicting DOOM and DIRE CONSEQUENCES if the victim continues in his own way.
The conman tells the victim “Have I got a deal for you!”
The scientist says much the same thing but masks his come-on with the stories of science: a peaceful tomorrow; a prosperous future; a worry-free life filled with the miracles of SCIENCE!
Whereas the con artist offers HOPE WITH A PRICE TAG ATTACHED, the scientist offers HOPE WITH SOME OTHER PRICE TAG.
The scammer nearly ALWAYS desires the money of others; science usually wishes to change long-standing patterns of behavior.
The masses of humanity COULD turn to God’s Word for guidance in times of chaos, confusion or fear.
Instead, the masses of humanity turn to those who offer them HOPE–even if that hope proves to be a false one.
“Something for nothing” and “IF ONLY.”
Many stories of the scammers begin with one or both of these premises.
So do many stories of science.
DOES the reader believe all of the rosy tales he has been told?
It is not YET too late: there is still a little time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
DOES the reader believe he is saved?
Make Your Calling and Election Sure: End Times Survival
DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?
Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation
