Man’s Shortcomings: Trying To Understand the Infinite With Finite Faculties

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
–Isaiah 55:8-9

One may spend HOURS seriously contemplating the two verses in Isaiah 55 (8 and 9) and STILL not be able to ‘wrap one’s head around‘ what they are saying.

Basically, the two verses are telling man “Hey! You cannot even understand the things I consider. But, that’s okay: you do not have to.”

The PROBLEMS begin whenever man BELIEVES he can understand the thoughts and ways of his Creator.

Man cannot EVEN begin to understand.

Those few who come to the realization that they are not equipped to understand the considerations of God achieve a peace within themselves and with all that surrounds them.

The others?

They grapple and struggle with ideas which are “above their pay grade,” but which they refuse to acknowledge are beyond their capabilities to comprehend.

The basic problem is that man attempts to understand the infinite possessing finite faculties.

This is the ultimate case of squaring the circle: man is NOT equipped to understand certain things, BUT worldly men refuse to accept their limitations.

Whenever man has delusions of grandeur and believes himself the equal of his Creator, man most usually creates more problems than he initially tackled.

This behavior has been demonstrated throughout history, but during the end times, these actions increase because man’s disbelief increases.

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
–2THESSALONIANS 2:3-4

To boil it all down: man is NOT God.

BUT, to the deceived, man IS God.

If they knew otherwise, they would NOT be deceived.

“For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
–Isaiah 55:10-11

The Road To Hell

“The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

One popular saying–which is NOT the same thing as a TRUE saying–is that the ‘road to hell is paved with good intentions.’

But is it?

OR, is the saying itself just one more example of a maxim which the world embraces because it sounds good?

Oddly enough, for a saying which is so popular and so repeated, the world does NOT agree to its basic meaning. IF one grabs a dictionary to look up the meaning of the phrase, one is greeted with a number of quite different meanings.

Well-intended acts can lead to disasters.

proverb Good intentions do not matter if a person’s actions lead to bad outcomes.

Prov. People often mean well but do bad things. (Can be a strong rebuke, implying that the person you are addressing did something bad and his or her good intentions do not matter.)

People say the road to hell is paved with good intentions to mean that people often intend to do good things but in fact do not, often because they are lazy or weak.

(saying) it is not enough to intend to do good things, behave better, etc.; you must actually do them, be better, etc.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions is a proverb or aphorism. An alternative form is “Hell is full of good meanings, but heaven is full of good works“.

As was stated, the saying is a popular one. When growing up, it was understood that it meant “Good intentions ALONE do not mean anything. A lot of people in hell probably claimed they had the best of reasons for behaving badly. People do not carry out their good intentions FOR WHATEVER REASON, and therefore, much that is good ultimately goes undone.”

LEFT UNSAID in all of the discussions this writer has had on the topic was the focus on GOOD WORKS as proof that someone is ‘good’ and going to heaven. But God’s Word is clear: a person obtains eternal salvation and enters the kingdom of heaven, NOT because of any good works, but due to GOD’S GRACE AND MERCY.

“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
–Romans 9:15-16

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
–John 1:13-14

[Yes, man must exhibit FAITH in order to receive the mercy of God. But then the question becomes, “From WHERE did man–who is basically wicked–get his faith?

“But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.”
–Galatians 3:22]

So then, the popular saying about the road to hell focuses the attention on MAN’S INTENTIONS and MAN’S GOOD WORKS–not on the mercy of God.

It has been speculated that a GREAT MANY on the ‘broad way of destruction’ do NOT have their attention focused on the mercy of God.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
–Matthew 7:13-14

DOES the reader believe the path he walks is paved?

Coffee Talk

Good or bad, COFFEE is a most popular drink in the country formerly known as the United States of America.

IF one is AGAINST drinking coffee (as one man once put it: “Caffeine is a drug. Are you supposed to be taking drugs?.”), then almost EVERY OTHER DAY, some ‘scientific’ study will support your view, claiming that coffee is the worst thing one can put into his body.

IF one is FOR drinking coffee (as one teen once put it: “It gets me fired up. It gives me pep!”), then almost EVERY OTHER DAY, some ‘scientific’ study will support YOUR view, claiming that coffee is good for what ails a body.

We’ll just go with what Jesus Christ Himself had to say on the matter.

“And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”
–Matthew 15:10-11

“Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

[Of course, Jesus was referring to eating with unwashed hands or dishes, but He did say that what goes INTO a man does NOT defile him; what comes OUT of a man does–or words to that effect.]

This piece then will neither cheer nor condemn coffee: it will serve as a commentary on a few things which are said when sometimes TALKING about coffee.

1- A HOT STEAMING CUP OF JOE.

Perhaps the reader has heard someone (VERY occasionally) refer to a cup of coffee as a “hot, steaming cup of Joe.”

Where did this phrase come from?

A LOT of people have made a LOT of guesses, but the answer is: no one knows.

Some of the guesses are entertaining and/or amusing.

After waking up in the morning, millions of people choose to drink a hot (or cold) cup of coffee. Why, though, is this drink referred to as ‘a cup of joe’? Indeed, how did coffee get this nickname?

Well, the origin of this phrase is uncertain. However, there are a few theories. One of them is as follows: Josephus Daniels, who was Secretary of the Navy, banned U.S. Navy ships from serving alcoholic beverages in the year 1914. This ban led to sailors consuming more coffee (among other drinks).

Since Josephus Daniels was responsible for the ban and thus perhaps being partly blamed for the growing intake of coffee, they (the sailors) nicknamed the drink after him, thus it became ‘a cup of joe,’ Joe being short for Josephus. This theory, however, is considered to be unlikely.

“Cup of Joe” is MOSTLY used among the older set–and then, it is a phrase mostly heard in the US or South Africa.

CUP OF JOE

A cup of coffee. Though the true origin is unknown, “joe” as a synonym for coffee is theorized to either be a shortening of “jamoke” (a combination of Java and Mocha, two major suppliers of coffee beans), or as a reference to it being the drink of the ordinary man (i.e., the “average joe”).Primarily heard in US,South Africa.

2- A CUP OF JAVA.

This phrase is a little more common and its origin is a little easier to understand.

The island of Java (part of Indonesia) was a MAJOR supplier of the world’s coffee beans for a LONG TIME.

slang A cup of coffee. A reference to the island of Java, a famous exporter of coffee beans.

The phrase inspired a hit song in the 1940’s called “Java Jive.”

Java Jive is a song written by Ben Oakland and Milton Drake in 1940 and most famously recorded by The Ink Spots. The lyrics speak of the singer’s love of coffee. The lyrics also reflect the slang of the day, including a reference to “Mr. Moto“, a Japanese film spy.

3- COFFEE, TEA OR ME?

Amazingly or not, this phrase is STILL heard, though somewhat infrequently.

The words refer to a book which was the supposed memoir of a couple of fake stewardesses.

Coffee, Tea or Me? is a book of purported memoirs by the fictitious stewardesses Trudy Baker and Rachel Jones, written by the initially uncredited Donald Bain and first published in 1967. The book depicts the anecdotal lives of two lusty young stewardesses, and was originally presented as factual.

And these are only a FEW of the things one might hear when a discussion turns to COFFEE.

End Times Changes To God’s Word = Corruption of God’s Word

For HUNDREDS of YEARS, God’s Word was fairly stable.

And false teachers had to depend upon using smiles, “aw shucks“ mannerisms and smooth talk to deceive their listeners.

BUT during the end times, God’s Word has been subjected to many great changes–most of them coming from the newer and ‘better’ translations of the Bible.

The VAST MAJORITY of these changes may be filed under “Corruptions to God’s Word.”

Because there are so many examples of these changes (compared with the old text) floating around on the Internet, this article will only examine a couple of these changes.

PHILIPPIANS 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (King James Version)

New verse: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (New International Version)

New verse: “I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.” (American Standard Version)

Can the reader see the difference between the older translation and the newer ones?

Is the reader familiar with the newer translations?

Has the reader ever wondered why these newer versions delete “Jesus,” “Jesus Christ” or “Christ” (when specifically referring to Jesus)?

And the newer versions are VERY consistent about this omission.

DANIEL 3:24-25

Old verses: (King James Version) “Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

New verses: (New International Version) “Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

New verses: (American Standard Version) “Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste: he spake and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the aspect of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

Was that fourth man that Nebuchadnezzar the king saw in the furnace a son of the gods–or was He the Son of God?

As was previously mentioned, if the reader has a little time and an Internet connect–AND, the interest in doing so–he will easily be able to find DOZENS of changes in the newer translations which completely CHANGE THE MEANING of the verses in question.

1- These ‘changes’ are CORRUPTIONS by Satan and his workers of iniquity.

2- These ‘changes’ are an unmistakable sign of the end times.

DOES the reader believe that all of the changes in God’s Word is because the ones who change it are using “better translations?”

Eternal Salvation is For Those Who WANT It

“But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.”

God’s Word states that God’s mercy is for ALL.

“For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.”
–Romans 11:32

BUT, God does NOT force His mercy upon ANYONE.

> “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”
–Psalm 86:5

God’s mercy, therefore, is for all who genuinely desire it.

God’s mercy is for all those who care enough about God’s mercy, that they seek God out.

God’s mercy is for all those who FEAR Him.

“Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.”
–Psalm 33:18-19

How tragic for all those who will not obtain God’s great mercy because they did not desire it.

How truly tragic for all those who will not obtain God’s great mercy because they did not believe it.

This includes all those who use great swelling words about God’s mercy in order to defraud and deceive.

DOES the reader believe that God is so lonely that he will save ALL men–even those who scorn God’s eternal salvation?
