The attributes (or, essential characteristics or qualities) of God are a bundles of features which are BEYOND the understanding of man.
The attributes of God are, therefore, unknowable to man because man has NO experience with ANY of those qualities.
Man can guess.
Man can speculate.
Man can imagine.
BUT, man cannot KNOW those attributes because man has nothing to compare God’s characteristics to.
A FEW of God’s better-known attributes follow.
1- ETERNAL and INFINITE and FOREVER.
Man’s life is short–which is NOT necessarily a BAD thing, because man gets into so much trouble given his short amount of years on earth.
The reader might well imagine how much trouble man might land in IF he normally lived to be 200-300 years-old.
God ALWAYS was. God had NO beginning and has NO end. God knows FOREVER; man can only speculate on what “forever” means.
Words like “forever” and “infinite” are only WORDS to man, who believes that if a man lives to be 100 that man is OLD.
When Moses asked God about what name he should call Him, God told Moses I AM–meaning that God always has been and always will be.
“Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
“And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.”
This is the first attribute of God man has immense difficulty understanding.
God Himself tried to break it to man gently about how much higher God is than man (a creation of God).
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Man is sinful.
God is HOLY.
God ALONE is HOlY.
“Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.”
God ALWAYS does what is right.
God ALWAYS eschews sin.
God is ALWAYS perfect.
“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
MAN, on the other hand, does NOT compare.
MAN can be said to be a SIN MAGNET.
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
This is another of God’s attributes which man can NOT understand because man is in NO way, HOLY.
As God is.
3- GOD IS OMNIPOTENT.
omnipotent: one who has unlimited power or authority : one who is omnipotent.
Man–regardless of how GREAT a man might believe himself to be–has his FLAWS and DRAWBACKS.
God has NONE of those defects.
As Jesus Christ pointed out:
” And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
No matter how powerful a man might become, he is NOT God.
Man will NEVER become God–even the “little g” gods that the media and entertainment like to prattle on about.
And so, man has NO understanding of omnipotence.
The list goes on…
DOES the reader believe the he can understand the qualities that make God God?
It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
DOES the reader believe he is saved?
DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
