Those who watch and wait patiently for the Day of the LORD (the day when Jesus Christ returns to earth) OCCASIONALLY embark upon flights of fancy concerning that day of God’s judgment and wrath.
Most usually, these flights of fancy occur whenever other distractions have worked their distracting power upon the watcher.
And (most usually), they involve some sort of wishing/hoping that the waiting might soon be over.
This is another way of saying, “Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.” (Which is an amalgamation of sorts of Revelation 22:12–where Jesus says “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” —and Revelation 22:20, where the apostle John says, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”.)
HOWEVER, once the idle wish/desire for the waiting to be over has settled upon the watcher, Amos 5:18 is ALMOST immediately brought to mind.
“Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.”
And it is not like Amos 5:18 is the only verse in God’s Word which has this thought.
“That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.”
–Zephaniah 1:15-17
“Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.”
–Isaiah 13:6
It is at about this point that the watcher, upon reading God’s Word, decides there are WORSE things than WAITING for the Day of the LORD.
[It’s not like we haven’t heard the popular stories about Amos 5:18 and Zephaniah 1:15-17 being for the mockers in the audience. HOWEVER, God’s Word is clear: and Amos 5:18 and Zephaniah 1:15-17 seem clear enough AND neither verse is preceded by ANY references to mockers.]
It seems clear that the day of the LORD features much death and destruction. Although this is intended for the sinners on earth, PERHAPS some ‘collateral damage‘ COULD be POSSIBLE.
At any rate, though God COULD save everyone he wanted out of the chaos, one is reminded of what Jesus told Satan (recorded in Matthew 4:7).
“Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”
Again, there are WORSE things than WAITING for the Day of the LORD.
And so, those who watch should be patient for the arrival of that day.
Is the reader patiently waiting for the time when Jesus Christ returns to earth?
It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
