Gas War

GAS PUMP, RETRO

On occasion, people of a certain age group will gather to REMINISCE about happenings and/or times long past.

One of the hallmarks of the elderly is their ability to recall past events which–because they are so unlike ANY that are today experienced–are totally foreign to the youth.

It was on such an occasion recently that the topic of the almost-forgotten phenomenon of the GAS WAR surfaced.

For those of a younger persuasion, a GAS WAR was when two or more gas stations competed for customers by LOWERING the price of their petroleum products, primarily gasoline.

[NOTE: This ‘gas war’ phenomenon, while NOT receiving much Internet chatter, STILL does have Internet references.]

Hard for the present generation to imagine: that prices for gasoline were stable FOR YEARS at around 22 cents a gallon–and that any pricing BELOW 22/gallon usually occurred during a GAS WAR. During that recent reminisce, several present recalled seeing prices of 18 or 19 cents per gallon. Other prices points were also recalled.

“I remember gas was 19 cents a gallon my senior year in high school at [a local general store which sold gasoline–presently priced at $4.79 a gallon at that establishment]. But that was during a gas war.”

“I remember when the price of gasoline went up to 35 cents a gallon in ’75 thinking, ‘How will people afford that?’”

To the youth, who know only of gasoline at much higher prices, all talk of prices below one dollar per gallon have the ring of wild-eyed tales.

However, there still exists those of an EARLIER generation who experienced gasoline prices MUCH differently than today’s experiences.

That experience was of a time when gasoline was considered a PRODUCT and not a force-for-influencing-group-behavior.

HAS the reader EVER experienced gasoline prices that were much lower?

It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
