Harry Callahan Vs The Modern World

'DIRTY HARRY' CALAHAN

Back in the 1970’s and 80’s, actor Clint Eastwood played a part in a popular movie series which made him even more of a movie star than he already was.

Clint Eastwood played the part of Inspector “Dirty Harry” Callahan, a police detective in San Francisco.

There were FIVE Dirty Harry movies and, in each one, the writers tried to give Eastwood at least ONE totally memorable line which then could be used for marketing the movie, for kids playing Dirty Harry in their backyards, for ANYONE who needed something ‘cool’ to say when in a jam.

IN the first movie, Dirty Harry, the line took the form of a Clint Eastwood soliloquy, (said to a villain as Eastwood cocked his infamous .44 magnum revolver).

I know what you’re thinking: “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I’ve kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do you, punk?

In a later film, Dirty Harry said a line that became somewhat memorable and which is AT ODDS with the modern world.

Well, you’re a good man, lieutenant. A good man always knows his limitations

In the modern world, knowing one’s limitations is not very popular.

Mainly because many moderns feel they have FEW limitations to worry about.

So, while Inspector Harry Callahan observed that a ‘good man knows his limitations,’ the modern man declares “That was a MOVIE!  And that MOVIE was made almost 50 years ago!”

WHICH view does the reader hold: the modern man’s OR Harry Callahan’s?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

The End Times Will NOT Wait

waiting...

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
–Habakkuk 2:3

From talking to a LARGE number of folks during the past several weeks, it has become VERY apparent that there are a GREAT NUMBER of misconceptions about the end times–especially, the last days of the end times.

Because it has become such a feature of modern life that one’s CONVENIENCE is waited upon, hand and foot, a significant portion of moderns believe that this will extend to the end times: that the end times  will be presented for each person’s convenience, not for God’s plan for His creation.

Another significant portion MISS that the end times is God’s time to judge His creation ACCORDING TO HIS LAWS AND COMMANDS HE HAS LAID DOWN OVER THE CENTURIES.

As one young man put it, “Judge ME?  Who, in their right mind, would want to judge me?  I haven’t done anything wrong!”

BUT, the young man is NOT alone: there are any number of people who feel that they, NOT God, determine what the end times’ agenda will be.

And paying a price for any behaviors deemed less than satisfactory is NOT part of that agenda.

God, in His Word, begs to differ.

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”
–Revelation 20:12

Such wayward thinking, AS THAT YOUNG MAN and others of a similar mind, is nicely summed up in the second chapter of Romans.

“And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God.”
–Romans 2:3-11

ALL readers should understand ONE thing about the end times:

Regardless of one’s beliefs to the contrary, the end times will come on their own schedule.

The end times will wait for NO man.

WHAT thoughts do the reader have about the timing of last days’ event?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Modern Equation

EQUATION

It has been famously said–MANY times–that “Time is money.”

Time is money” is so well-known that it might be called the “modern equation.”

And that is EXACTLY the way most men earn a living–they trade their time for someone else’s money.

Whether that man is digging a ditch OR designing Internet websites OR protecting the payee from someone or something which wishes to harm him or his family, most men do not possess anything else of value other than their TIME.

Oh, that time is often confused with a certain set of skills, BUT it is the time that is being purchased: the skills are a sort of side benefit which come along for the ride.

MONEY, in fact, is only a convenient way of storing one’s wealth (time).

Whether one values sea shells, gold or diamonds, or pieces of green paper claiming “In God We Trust,” money is little more than the storing up of that which someone else bartered their time (once upon a time) for.

SO, the fact that men trade their TIME for someone else’s MONEY is nothing new.

HOWEVER, one thing about the times in which we live (the end times) which IS new: men will barter the LEAST amount of their TIME for the LEAST amount of someone else’s MONEY (or other items of value).

Whereas in times past, most men would trade LARGE chunks of their time for (relatively) LARGE amounts of money, reserving the smaller amounts of time for their families, sleeping and eating, their sweethearts, their hobbies or their other passions, NOW most men look around for someone to trade ANY amount of money for much smaller amounts of their time.

Perhaps it is the culture’s incessant emphasis on money and things of value?

Perhaps it is a sign of times being tight and money being more necessary than before?

Perhaps it is a sign that moderns value money over almost everything else?

The Bible gives us a clue as to why this last observation might be the one to pick–particularly during the end times.

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”
–Matthew 24:12

Perhaps moderns do not wish to spend their extra TIME with those who were previously-referred-to as ‘loved ones’–because they have FEW who are ‘loved’?

Whatever the reason(s), it does not appear to matter if the man looking to trade his time for money offers LEGITIMATE or ILLEGITIMATE time (a scam).

Many times, those who have possessions (money) appear eager to give them to con-men.

Once again, God’s Word gives us a clue about why those who pursue money are NOT satisfied with their wealth–and therefore go looking to trade it for something ‘better.’

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase”
–Ecclesiastes 5:10

It has famously been said that the ONLY thing man has of value is his TIME.

So, it makes sense that men would trade their TIME for MONEY to make their way in this world.

HAS the reader noticed that others are now willing to trade smaller and smaller amounts of their time for smaller and smaller amounts of money?

DOES the reader have any thoughts on why this might be so?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
