Some time ago, a discussion was held which focused primarily, on the methods God uses to extract vengeance and to help along those who fear Him.
If memory serves, the conversation focused on why God doesn’t use his great and mighty power more to achieve His ends.
In fact, the wicked (many times) mistake God’s long-suffering and patience for WEAKNESS.
It doesn’t matter that wicked men have made this SAME MISTAKE repeatedly down through the ages: modern man apparently feels he is too clever to fall into the same pits as his ancestors.
At any rate, there was one argument which stuck in the mind WEEKS LATER. The point was made by a pagan idol worshiper and was interesting–which is NOT the same as correct.
“Hey! IF God is so powerful, why doesn’t He just zap anyone who gives Him or His followers any trouble? He could do it, right? Why shouldn’t He? He could also cut out a LOT of waiting and indecision IF He did. Smite ’em good and hard! That’s the way to do it!”
The answer to the man’s argument was NOT very convincing to the man, I’m afraid.
“God COULD just totally overpower His enemies, but that wouldn’t be the best way to go about it for the long haul, I believe. And God says in His Word that He will use the weak things of man to confound those wicked men who oppose God. God is God because he has the patience and self-control to hold back–even when He probably doesn’t want to.”
As the Creator of ALL that surrounds man, God has the power to smite His enemies repeatedly. YET, it brings God GREAT delight to stymie His opponents using the weakness of their foes. To frustrate those who believe themselves to be the master of their fate using the SMALL, INCONSEQUENTIAL things of the world is something God enjoys.
When God HOLDS BACK, He is actually demonstrating His power more than ‘zapping’ a hundred unbelievers.
Back to that long-ago conversation…
“Blood on the bricks! We wanna see blood on the bricks!”
“That’s the way I felt when I was a heathen.”
And, after a parting shot (“If you had any sense, you’d still be a pagan!“) that’s where the various viewpoints remain until today WITH ALL PARTIES CONCERNED.
DOES the reader have any thoughts on this subject?
It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
