Third World?

One common put-down which is directed at COUNTRIES (or the people who originate from those countries) instead of individuals is “third world.”

“These roads are so bad, it’s like living in a third world country.”

Third world” usually denotes a lack of development or amenities to which the one who made the remark is used to.

Where did the term “third world” come from?

The term “Third World” arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either NATO or the Warsaw Pact. The United StatesCanadaJapanSouth KoreaWestern European nations and their allies represented the “First World“, while the Soviet UnionChinaCubaNorth KoreaVietnam and their allies represented the “Second World“. This terminology provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on political divisions. Strictly speaking, “Third World” was a political, rather than an economic, grouping.

So, ‘third world’ was originally a POLITICAL term, not an economic one.

HOWEVER, “Third world” eventually (at least in America) became known as a way of identifying less-than-desirable conditions.

ESPECIALLY when those conditions had ANYTHING to do with economics.

Did the government do something underhanded and cheap?

That’s so third world!

Are the roads not kept up as they once were?

“It’s like living in a third world country!

Is business falling down on the job, not doing it’s job?

“Hey!  You’re NOT from the third world, are you?!”

Like it or not, “third world” came to mean a poor or UNDERdeveloped  country.

Because many Third World countries were economically poor and non-industrialized, it became a stereotype to refer to developing countries as “third world countries”, yet the “Third World” term is also often taken to include newly industrialized countries like Brazil, China and India now more commonly referred to as part of BRIC.

Third world” was second-rate.

Third world” was NOT developed as the rest of the world.

Third world” needed HELP!

And when your neighbor refers to something in the United States as “third world,” he is NOT being complimentary.

This is only mentioned because the term is now commonly applied to AMERICA by AMERICANS–EVEN THOUGH life is NOT the sum of money one controls.

“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
–Luke 12:15

Labeling America as ‘third world’ is a sign of frustration (to be sure), BUT it is ALSO a sign that things have gone south in the good ole US of A.

Does the reader have any experiences with the label “third world“?

Are they GOOD experiences or BAD experiences?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
