A Surprising Remark

SURPRISING

Occasionally, one will hear a remark which catches him TOTALLY off-guard.

And even more rare is the occasion when the remark is surprising NOT ONLY FOR WHAT WAS SAID.  Very occasionally, the remark is surprising because of WHO MADE THE REMARK.

And so it was that a few days ago, a remark was made which COMPLETELY surprised this listener.

The remark was a question.

The question?

“Who got Mary pregnant: God or Joseph?”

NOW, the person posing this question was a total HEATHEN.

Which made the remark (question) surprising.

The question was sudden and unexpected.  It was not revealed how it came into the head of the one who asked.

After a bit of thought–it was decided that the person came upon this information when he was a youngster being taught what youngsters were ONCE ALL mostly taught.

The person’s answer?

When the listener offered that it was GOD who got Mary pregnant, the one who posed the question AGREED.

“That’s right.”

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”
–Matthew 1:18

NEXT UP: some investigation into where the information for the question ORIGINALLY came from.

“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
–Matthew 1:18-21

“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
–Luke 1:26-35

For better or for worse: a person often refers to that which they have been taught at an earlier age.

The one who posed the question might have become a TOTAL heathen, but that does NOT mean that that TOTAL heathen has to REMAIN a TOTAL heathen.

Right?

IF the poser of the question does NOT remain an unbeliever, then it might just be because of what he once learned many years ago when he was an impressionable youngster.

WHAT does the reader believe: is one able to cling to those things one was taught at an earlier age?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
