SPORTS: The Game Behind the Game

SPORTS

As this is being written, today is February 14–VALENTINE’S DAY–to most of the world.

And whenever the first half of the month of February is remembered, Valentine’s Day is USUALLY one of the top reasons for doing so.

But there was ANOTHER day recently which is celebrated by the world–and celebrated with perhaps MORE gusto than VALENTINE’S DAY.

That day is Super Bowl Sunday when the two top teams in the National Football League (NFL) meet on the field to settle for another year who is the best team in the league.

And the great MAJORITY of folks who are casual fans or occasional fans believe that the issue of who is the best team will be settled on the field.

BUT is it?

Many moons ago, over a DOZEN folks tried to convince this writer that the contests of sports (particularly PROFESSIONAL SPORTS) have predetermined outcomes. BUT, this was NOT believed because it was something that DIDN’T WANT TO BE BELIEVED (not because the information used in those folks’ arguments was faulty–it was not.)

ALL one has to do is 1) know a bit about gamblers and 2) know a bit about the beginnings of the NFL.

1- Gamblers ALWAYS are looking for ways to “beat the system.” They want to KNOW what the result of a contest will be BEFORE they place their bet.  This is known as a “sure thing.”  Anyone who has spent much time around gamblers know they spend a considerable amount of time trying to figure out ways to “beat the system.”  In this manner, they hope to be able to cash in on their bets.

2- MOST of the early owners of the NFL teams were VERY heavily involved in gambling or the gambling world (as detailed at this link).

The NFL was NOT seen as a sport.

The NFL was seen as a chance to make some money on a “sure thing.”

Think of all the teams who have spent 3+ quarters being a wall mat and then suddenly, come to life in the last few minutes due to the opposing team employing the “prevent defense.”

Boxing and other 1-on-1 sports have LONG had an association with predetermined outcomes. Perhaps this is because the overwhelming favorite in a match can lose to ‘phantom punches‘?

As have nearly all professional sports who use mindless ‘celebrations’ by players as distractions to cover up plays which are obviously rigged.

Regardless of how the reader feels, sports will continue to go on.

And those who hang around sports will continue to try and get a leg up on the competition–those who occasionally bet.

WHAT does the reader believe about the outcomes of various sporting events?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
