A Few Additional Thoughts on Suicide

SUICIDE?

A few days ago, ETPR offered a few thoughts on the topic of ‘suicide.’

The principle thought being that if one commits suicide, one is deceived.  There were other thoughts produced by that discussion, but the one about suicide being committed by the deceived was the Top Topic.

Today, a phone call was received by someone who is an acquaintance who worships in an Eastern idol-worshiping religion.

He was consulted because he was one of the ones involved in the original suicide discussions.

The call began with a question (“Did you call me  a couple of days ago?”) and ended up with an apology of sorts because he ‘wasn’t feeling well’ and couldn’t quite remember what the conversation was about.

“I asked you what your spiritual leader–the one who is no longer with us–said about suicide.”

“What did I say?”

“You said that IF they committed suicide they were possessed by evil spirits.”

“I thought that’s what was talked about.  I’ve had some time to think it over.  He NEVER would have said they were possessed.”

“That’s what you said he said.”

“Yeah, but he NEVER once used the word ‘possessed.’”

“Well, what did he say?”

And this is where MOST of the additional information about an Eastern religion’s thoughts on suicide was imparted.

“He said that if someone commits suicide, then they come back as a ghost in the next life–and that was said as a deterrent. Actually, he once said that IF someone committed suicide, they end up being a VILLAGE OF GHOSTS.”

“A village of ghosts?  I’m not sure I understand.”

“No one wants to come back as a disembodied ghost.  There’s all sorts of rituals for ridding temples of ghosts: exorcism rituals.”

“But there’s no such thing as ghosts.”

“Sez you!  The rituals mostly involve holy men, string and milk.”

“String?”

“Yeah, they put the string (unbroken) COMPLETELY around the area they think the ghosts are.  The string first has to be dipped in milk and then blessed by the holy men.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, and if a person has a ghost then they put the string around their neck!  I’ve watched a couple of times. There was this chick who was supposed to be bothered by an army of ghosts!  They dipped the string in milk, blessed it over and over and then wrapped it around her neck.”

“What happened to her?”

“Oh, she got better.  At least I think she did.”

“So, basically, your group believes if you commit suicide you become a ghost in the next life? And a ghost is sort of an evil spirit?”

“It doesn’t sound as bad as it is!”

Some additional chitchat was engaged in over the subjects of holy water, salt and what is necessary to make sure that no evil spirits get into where you live.

BUT, though that might all make a good piece some day, today is NOT that day.

HAS the reader had any additional time to spend on the subject of what he believes about suicide?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Suicide: An Interesting Discussion

SUICIDE?

Recently, the topic of SUICIDE was discussed.

What made this discussion of interest was NOT ONLY the topic and what was said, but how the discussion was held.  It started as a topic for two people and then–a few days later–AFTER mentioning it to someone else–was picked later by a completely different person.

It ended up being quite a REVOLVING discussion.

For a topic which has been hammered by the media, by the entertainment bigwigs and by society at large, one would THINK that ALL that can be said about suicide has already been said.

BUT, the odd little discussion PROVED that this was NOT the case.

The first discussion revolved around the idea that those who take their own lives are deceived.  Looking back, it’s not remembered HOW that topic came up, but it did.

“There are a GREAT number of people who say they are going to pull the trigger (on a gun aimed at their own heads) to ‘stop the pain’–whatever the pain might be.”

“That’s a pretty severe way to stop pain.”

“Yeah, well, but if a guy is hurtin’–and it can be a physical hurt or it can be a mental or emotional hurt–then, after a while, he just wants to stop the hurting, it doesn’t matter HOW.”

I’ve heard that before: that someone commits suicide to ‘stop the pain.’

“Apparently, there’s something to it.”

“Okay, but what IF it doesn’t?  What if killing yourself doesn’t stop the pain, but makes it worse in a different way?”

“I dunno.  I never thought about that.”

“Why would someone take their life?  God gave them their life and instead of GOD deciding when they will go, THEY decide.”

“NOT everyone is a big believer in God.”

Well, whether you believe or not, it’s not up to you to decide.  That’s why so few people commit suicide.”

“Maybe…”

“IF you commit suicide, you are deceived, no doubt about it.”

AND THAT is where that first part of the suicide discussion ended.  There were a few back-and-forth comments by both folks, but nothing which sticks in the memory.

The SECOND part of the discussion involved a completely different person and began with a question.

“So-and-so and I were talking about suicide the other night and I said everyone who committed suicide was deceived.  What do you think about that?  Are they deceived? I haven’t decided.”

The other person was playing a game at his computer and only paying half attention to what was being said.

“Deceived?  I can see why you think that.  But maybe they are seeing things clearly.”

“Well, I think they are deceived.  They do not know what is going to happen.  They only GUESS at what will happen.”

He then cited a deceased spiritual leader of the Eastern sect he was in.

“[Deceased spiritual leader] says those who commit suicide are troubled by (demon) evil spirits.”

“That could be true.”

“Yeah.  He says they are possessed.”

“Well, I don’t know about that, but they are NOT right.  That’s for sure!”

AND THAT is where the SECOND PART of the suicide discussion left off.

Will there be further chapters to this account?

The reader should stay tuned to find out…

WHAT are the reader’s general thoughts on the subject of someone taking his own life (suicide)?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Is Anyone or Anything Truly Hopeless?

HOPELESS?

A few weeks ago, someone made the remark that “I didn’t think you thought ANYTHING was hopeless.”

Is that true?

Are there circumstances which are truly without hope?

What does God’s Word have to say (if anything) on the matter.

God’s Word states that the RIGHTEOUS always have hope because the RIGHTEOUS always have access to God–who looks out for the RIGHTEOUS–and to God’s POWER, which is unmatched.

“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”
–Psalms 34:15,17-19

God’s Word REPEATEDLY makes it clear that the wicked can expect NO such help.

“The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.”
–Psalms 34:16

“The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.”
–Proverbs 10:7

God informs his followers that NOTHING is beyond the power of God.  That alone is the source of much HOPE.

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”
–Jeremiah 32:27

IF one has access to God, then one has access to the Creator of ALL Things.

God grants access to those who love Him.

“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
–James 5:16

So, is ANYTHING truly hopeless?

IF one is a sincere follower of God or His Son, Jesus, then NO: nothing is without hope.

IF one is deceived and has placed his faith in man or the world, then YES: hopelessness is the lot of such folks.

The world has it’s OWN way of saying there is little hope for the wicked: “There’s no rest for the weary.”

Perhaps because the wicked are a weary lot?

There is NO hope for the wicked, evil or foolish once judgment has been rendered.

“For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?”
–Job 27:8

“The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.”
–Proverbs 10:29

“But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.”
–Job 11:20

DOES the reader believe that there are circumstances which are ‘hopeless’?

DOES the reader believe that certain conditions apply to these particular situations which render them ‘hopeless’?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
