MOST of the time, one believes he has heard it ALL–particularly when the topic is the end times.
BUT, every once in a GREAT while, someone says something that is not only surprising on the face of it but had never entered into the thoughts of the hearer before.
And so it was that the other day, someone who is younger offered (out of the clear blue sky–no one was talking about anything in particular) something COMPLETELY different. The last topic of conversation might have had to do with the old Hot Wheels miniature racing cars and the (mostly orange) plastic tracks they ran on.
“You know, the end times are a lot like the weather.”
“Like the weather? How do you figure?”
“Everybody talks a lot about both things, but no one does much about them.”
“Well, they do say that “Everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it.” You think the end times are a lot like that, huh?”
“Sure! People say you have to ‘get ready’ for the end times, but then, they NEVER actually do anything to get ready for what they think is coming.”
Just then, the old man down the hall (who must have been listening to the conversation) shouted the following:
“Hey! I’m buying fly strips! I’m doing that to get ready!”
“How are fly strips getting ready?”
He hobbled down the hall on his cane.
“I HATE flies. They buzz around and bother me. I put up fly strips and they get stuck on ’em! Hundreds of flies: stuck tight and not going anywhere!”
How do those fly strips get you ready for the end times?”
“I’ve heard the stories! I can read! There won’t be any electricity, so I’m getting prepared! There might not be any air conditioning or electricity, but there won’t be flies bothering me! And they’re only 10 for $2.00! That’s a bargain! They’re probably be $5.00 a piece one day! But until then…”
“I’ll check in on you to make sure you’re not face down on the carpet and covered in flies.”
“Don’t be checking on me! Check on someone who needs checking! Not me!”
[A stray thought about the entire situation: there was a fellow who once lived nearby named Donnie who was well-known (and generally, well-liked!) who died a few months back. He was genial but he was also overweight and drank copious amounts of beer. They found him a few days AFTER he had passed away sitting up in his chair.
It was wondered what Donnie would have to say about all of this?]
So, how about it?
DOES the reader believe the end times are like the weather?
Like it was declared at the beginning of this piece: sometimes you hear something that takes you totally by surprise.
It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
