Will The Reader Be Busy or Idle During the Last Days?

“He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.”
–Proverbs 18:9

More than one person has posed this question–in one form or another–over the past five years.

We NEVER have given what we considered to be a SATISFACTORY answer–so we decided to apply our mind to it and see if we could not do better.

Try as one might, there were NO verses from God’s Word addressing this particular situation during the last days. So, with NO verses to refer to, the reader is more or less FORCED to rely on hints and clues to this answer.

CLUE #1 – The reader is told repeatedly in God’s Word to use his time WISELY and to NOT QUIT making the attempt to convert unbelievers–not just before Jesus returns, BUT at all times.

“Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
–Mark 16:14-15

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
–John 8:12

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
–Romans 10:14-15

Though the world of the last days may appear to be crashing down all around him, the believer is to trust in God, believe in Jesus and lead as many as he can to salvation from eternal torment.

“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
–Matthew 10:7

“And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.”
–Jude 1:22-23

CLUE #2 – God does all the work of changing a nonbeliever’s heart.  All the person involved is doing is giving the nonbeliever a chance at salvation.

CLUE #3 – God’s Word admonishes the reader to keep busy, whether it is the last days or not. It stands to reason that God would want His people to stay busy at the end.

“And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.”
–Luke 19:13

“Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
–Luke 10:38-42

Staying busy” biblically is NOT the same as “busy work” (activity to make it appear that the active one is BUSY).

So, should the reader be busy or idle during the days before Jesus returns?

During the last days, the reader would do well to avoid “busy work,” and concentrate on being busy about kingdom of heaven matters.

WHICH will the reader be during the last days: slothful or busy?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
