“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”
–2CORINTHIANS 10:5
Once upon a time, there were many who kept journals of various flavors.
A journal, from the Old French “journal” (meaning “daily”), can refer to several things. In its original meaning, it refers to a daily record of activities, but the term has evolved to mean any record of activities, regardless of time elapsed between entries, such as a
- Diary, a record of what happened over the course of a day or other period
- Daybook, also known as general journal, a daily record of financial transactions
- Logbook, a record of events important to the operation of a vehicle, facility, or otherwise
- Transaction journal, a chronological record of data processing
Journals are kept for a variety of reasons.
- The workman might keep a journal of the details of his daily work: who it was for, how long it took and the nature of the work undertaken.
- A writer may have kept a daily journal of various thoughts, events and happening of interest he may wish to refer to at a later time.
- In earlier times, schoolchildren of a particular age were required by their science classes to record the types of weather, the temperature and/or clouds visible (as well as other related information) in a daily WEATHER JOURNAL.
- A driver might keep a journal of his various trips, the length of the trip, gasoline used and other pertinent information.
All of this is presented in order to introduce a recently-overhead conversation.
“I’ll be washing my dishes or doing some other boring chore when a thought will POP into my head–and it’s always a thought which makes me ‘chase my tail’ or ‘go around in circles’ in some way.”
“Would you say that the thought is one which torments you in some way?”
“Yeah, that’s exactly right.”
Thinking about this conversation later, 2Corinthians 10:5 came to mind. When talking to one of the two conversationalists later, the question was posed: “Why don’t you take those tormenting thoughts which pop into your head captive?”
“I don’t even know what means.”
It was explained that many of the thoughts man believes originates within himself are put into one’s mind by higher beings, particularly demonic entities.

“Tracing the origin” of where thoughts started is the beginning of understanding WHICH thoughts have been placed into one’s mind and which thoughts have originated with the thinker himself.
And that is when the idea of a journal to record these “thoughts which suddenly pop into one’s head“–as well as those which torment and those which suggest criminal or self-destructive behaviors–as well as WHEN those thoughts occur and other information at the time.
By studying this record; this “mind journal;” one gets used to distinguishing between thoughts which originate with the thinker and those thoughts which “suddenly appeared from nowhere” (often when the thinker was not thinking any related thoughts).
This line of thinking may strike the reader as extraordinary.
UNTIL the reader begins, maintains and then studies such a journal and comes to his own conclusions about thoughts, their origin and formation and consequentially taking such thoughts captive.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
