“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”
—Genesis 3:1
The first thing that the serpent did when tempting Eve in the garden was to challenge the authority of God’s Word. He did this by misstating what God had said (God had not said that Eve could not eat of every tree, just the one forbidden one) and by doing so, introduces doubt.
The world has been doing the same thing in the centuries since Jesus Christ ascended to heaven. The world continuously asks the question “Hath God said?” The world does this because all that is in the world is contrary to God’s Word.
“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
—1 John 2:16
The world hates God and it hates God’s Word.
“Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.”
—1 John 3:13
Therefore, it seeks to undermine His Word by raising up its own, alternate sources of authority to challenge God’s Word. And the world has spent centuries raising up those alternate sources of authority.
What are some of these world authorities who have been exalted by the world to challenge God’s Word?
- Scientists
- Doctors
- Media commentators
- Political leaders
- Teachers
- Wolves in the pulpit
- College professors
- Entertainment figures and celebrities
- Church systems
- Historians
- Men and women of letters
- Leaders of false religions
The reader may protest that these men and women have legitimate purposes other than to challenge God’s Word.
Perhaps.
But the world only recognizes its own. The world only promotes and exalts its own. And the world’s own is not of God.
“They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”
—1 John 4:5-6
Anyone who is of the world, who is exalted by the world, is a friend of the world. Anyone who is a friend of the world is an enemy of God.
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
—James 4:4
HOW THE WORLD WORKS

How do these authority figures challenge God’s Word?
In hundreds (thousands?) of ways every day.
God’s Word says man was created roughly 6000 year ago?
The scientists speaks of humans being around “50,000 years” and offers artifacts, other scientists and many worldly props to support his challenge.
The Corporate Media man reports the scientist’s words and introduces a hint of ridicule and mocking when reporting what God’s Word declares.
The teachers and college professors indoctrinate students with what the scientist claims, perhaps even directly challenging God’s Word along the way as “old-fashioned” and “out-of-date.”
The celebrity speaks to the young and ignorant as if what the other worldly sources of authority say on the subject is true and honest.
And so each member of the world’s exalted and renowned men and women weigh in on the subject. And each, of course, confirms the other while casting doubt on God’s Word.
It is one big self-reinforcing, interconnected, rotten, corrupt network, bent on undermining the Word of God.
It’s also a circle of created men and women furiously scratching each other’s backs while mocking the Creator.
It happens many times, every day. It might be so small a thing as urging readers to rely on themselves for “hard times.” It might be as trivial as providing “tips” for “self-reliance.”
What does the Bible say?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”
—Proverbs 3:5
Listen not to the world. The world is an enemy of God. The world has its own spokespeople who continuously challenge the truth of God’s Word. The world lies. Men lie.
Yet, most will follow the world and the lies of the world.
Because most walk the broad way that “leadeth to destruction.”
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
—Matthew 7:13-14
The first thing the serpent did when tempting Eve in the garden was to challenge God’s Word. The world is doing the same thing every day in hundreds, perhaps thousands, of ways. The world raises up its own authorities to compete with God.
The world’s authorities continue to ask the question of the serpent “Hath God said?”
The wise will listen to God, not the world.
THE GOSPEL
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-4
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
—Romans 10:9-13
