IF one listens carefully, one will hear–from the complaints of sufferers–that moderns endure a wide variety of torments and afflictions.
While many consider torments and afflictions to be of a purely PHYSICAL nature, they are also MENTAL, EMOTIONAL and SPIRITUAL as well.
One feature of torment is that often what is causing the torment to the sufferer might seem like a trivial matter to an onlooker.
One of the most frequently complained about torments is FEAR and its relatives: doubt, anxiety, worry and apprehension.
FEAR is often treated as an emotional or mental problem, but FEAR is a spiritual one.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
–1JOHN 4:18
One very common torment is being afflicted with doubt, anxiety and fear.
“The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”
–Proverbs 28:1One very common manifestation of this constant nagging worry is the feeling that SOMETHING might be wrong; that somehow, something VERY IMPORTANT has been forgotten.
Many know of the person who has devised a hundred-and-one reminders so he won’t forget anything important. Ribbons or string tied to the finger; dozens of sticky notes posted on refrigerators, TVs, computers, books, EVERYWHERE;
Many know of the person who, before leaving to go somewhere, checks, double-checks and then re-checks to make sure that he didn’t leave on a light, the stove, his computer, whatever. Even after all of the checking, the nagging doubt persists, causing such a person to make ONE FINAL CHECK–to reassure himself one last time before leaving.
Perhaps that person is the reader himself?
From a recent conversation:
“Ready to go?”
“Almost. I have to check the back room to make sure I didn’t leave the computer on.”
“Alright then.”
(After checking his back room, he prepared to leave. The driver got into the car and started it; the passenger walked to the car, reached for the door handle, stopped, returned to his front door, unlocked it and re-entered his home. After a short while, he reappeared, re-locked the front door and entered the car.)
“You ready now?”
“Yeah. I had to check the back room.”
“But you checked the back room once before we left the house.”
“No, I checked the computer before. I didn’t check the coffee pot. I wanted to make sure I turned it off.”
“Constantly checking and then going back to re-check: that’s an affliction.”
“No doubt about it. You got that right: I am afflicted.”
—The Daily Torment of Many Small Afflictions
Though moderns may complain about a great many torments and afflictions, the world offers nothing but its own ineffective remedies.
1- One of the most common “remedies” offered by the world’s authorities is DRUGS.
But DRUGS do not address the root cause of the affliction: mostly, DRUGS only allow the sufferer to not physically feel the effects of the torment as much as he might otherwise.
DRUGS deaden the pain.
Eventually, after “changing prescriptions” and other drug-related doings, drugs usually prove to be ultimately ineffective.
2- Another common “remedy” for torment and/or affliction is one or another flavor of THERAPY.
Does the reader know of anyone who has been “in therapy” (usually psychiatric) for MONTHS or YEARS? When asked how they are getting along, many will respond with “Well, I’ve still got my problems, but I’m making progress!”
THERAPY does not take care of torment or affliction so much as it makes the sufferer feel better about the pains of his affliction.
3- GIVING UP.
This is another way of saying, “We’re going to teach you how to live with your problem.”
“Yes, your problem is a bad circumstance, but you are just going to have to learn to deal with it.”
So many moderns live with so many torments–some of them debilitating.
Most of the world’s remedies may be ineffective–but they ALL give the sufferer the feeling that at least he’s doing something about his problem–even if what he is doing is not particularly effective.

Doesn’t it seem odd that, with all of the various “crazy” solutions offered by the world, that NONE of them address that there may be “agents of torment?”
Doesn’t it seem odd that none examine that there may be a reason for torment?
That torment might be a judgment?
Odd.
DOES the reader suffer some small (or large) torment or affliction?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
