Maybe Today is the Day the Reader Decides to Walk a Better Path

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

–Matthew 7:13-14

Most people believe very strongly that they have picked the path they now walk.

BUT HAVE THEY?

REALLY?

A doctor once gave this analogy: “It’s like if you were standing in a hole. Most people stand in holes–but they don’t know they are in a hole because they have NEVER NOT been in a hole. And you can’t tell them they’re in a hole: they won’t believe you. BUT, once a person GETS OUT OF THE HOLE, they are amazed. “I was standing in a hole! I didn’t know!” The trick is to get the person to get up out of his hole: where he can SEE and KNOW he has been standing in a hole–probably for his whole life! IF you can do that, you’ve pretty much won the battle because the person FINALLY understands they were standing in a hole!“

For ALL of those who believe they have chosen their path in life: a question.

“IF everyone is choosing his own individual path then why do almost all of the paths lead to the same place?”

It’s similar to a question a person who did NOT like church folk once asked.

“IF going to church makes you so good, why do so many who go to church have it so bad?”

Both of these questions could have a little light shined on them by listening to the doc’s story about standing in a hole.

ALL those who are headed down the same path–even though they will argue all day long that they PICKED this particular path?

They’re standing in a hole!

All of the church folk who have it “so bad“?

They’re standing in a hole, too!

ALL of those people have been standing in holes all of their lives. And you can’t tell them, “Hey! You’re standing in a hole, dummie!”

Some will get angry.

Others will just laugh at you.

NONE will believe you BECAUSE they don’t know anything else EXCEPT standing in that hole.

“BUT, once a person GETS OUT OF THE HOLE, they are amazed. “I was standing in a hole! I didn’t know!” The trick is to get the person to get up out of his hole: where he can SEE and KNOW he has been standing in a hole–probably for his whole life!”

Maybe today is the day the reader gets out of his hole?

Maybe today is the day the reader tries something new?

Maybe today is the day the reader decides to walk a DIFFERENT path; a BETTER path than the one he has been walking his whole life?

MAYBE TODAY IS THE DAY THE READER DECIDES THERE IS A GOD AND THAT HIS WORD IS TRUE?

It begins with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

One either believes it or one does not.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8

IF one believes, then one’s life WILL change, WILL change greatly and WILL change for the better.

Almost immediately.

And YOU won’t have anything to do with those changes.  It’s almost like someone else was doing them FOR you.

And that’s not untrue.

Maybe today is the day the reader decides, “I REALLY believe this to be TRUE.”?

Maybe…?

SO…

Maybe today is the day the reader changes the path he has walked?

BUT, then again, most are so comfortable down in their hole, they probably will think about it–or not–and then say,

“Maybe next week?”

IS the reader comfortable with the way he has always done things?

OR, does the reader feel that something is not quite right and he has to make some changes?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

A Person May Travel Many Wrong Paths Before Walking the Right One

waking a path

At one point during the past couple of weeks, an acquaintance began reminiscing out loud–for all the world, including this writer to hear.

For some reason, the man began revisiting all of the many times in his life when he made important decisions.  For some unknown reason, the man LOUDLY started calling himself names whenever he brought up a time in his past where he made a decision which didn’t turn out too well for him.

After (what seemed to be at least ten or fifteen minutes of this (mostly) very public self-berating), two observations were made.

BOTH observations were motivated by the witnessing of the fairly severe self-chastisement.

OBSERVATION #1

“I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself.  It sounds like you made a lot of good decisions too.”

“Easy for you to say.  You weren’t there.  You didn’t have to suffer the consequences.”

“Okay.  Well, it could have been worse.”

“Yeah, it could have been a LOT worse.  I was lucky a lot of times.”

Which led to the second of the two observations offered.

OBSERVATION #2

“Well, you know, the VAST majority of the time, a person has to walk a LOT of wrong paths before he finds the right one.”

This made the fellow stop and he seemed to do some reflecting.

Then he smiled. (At least he stopped the yelling.)

“That might be one of the smartest things I’ve ever heard you say.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, you say a LOT of really stupid stuff–or at least it sounds stupid unless the person agrees with you. But, I think you’re onto something here.  A person goes the wrong way a bunch of times before (hopefully) finding the way that will work for him.”

This reminded of an event which happened YEARS before this, where someone said something similar (which was related to the man who had been raking himself over the coals).

Standing in line at a convenience store one day, chatting with the cashier–who was the mother of a couple of boys familiar to the chatter.

“So, how are your boys?”

“Well, Michael is doing real well in school and in sports. But I don’t know about Edward.  He’s in Florida and just finished up four years at Oceanography school.  We spent TONS of money on that outfit and I get the feeling he’s not sure he should have went there.

I don’t think he really knows what he wants to do.”

“Well, I was just reading an article that said that MOST people don’t know what they really want to do until they turn 40.”

At this point, a well-dressed man in a suit and tie who was in line BEHIND got out of line, came up and shook the hand of the chatter.

“I’m so glad to hear you say that.  It makes me feel so much better!  I’m not 40 yet!”

The moral of all the accounts seemed to be: “A person will PROBABLY walk a LOT of wrong paths before finding the right one.”

That includes the most important path one may walk: the strait (narrow) path–which Jesus instructed “few” find.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
–Matthew 7:13-14

BEWARE: The Deception That is “Abbreviated Thinking”

abbreviated thinking

Perhaps the reader has experienced the problem that is “abbreviated thinking“?

[This has also been referred to as “thinking in shorthand” or “mental shorthand.”]

It works like this:

The reader may think that illegal immigration is a problem.

First, the reader may usually arrive at this conclusion by mentally ticking off the reasons a wave of undocumented foreigners is not a healthy circumstance for a country.

Next, the reader may compare what he knows about the circumstances of a country absent such an influx of undocumented beings with the circumstances of the same country AFTER it has undergone a large inflow of foreigners who are ignoring the laws of the land concerning their immigration.

Finally, the reader may arrive at a conclusion:  unchecked, illegal immigration is not healthy for a country.

In ‘abbreviated thinking,’ most of the above thought processes have been eliminated.

In ‘abbreviated thinking,’ the person may hear “illegal immigration’ and IMMEDIATELY skip to the equation “ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION = BAD.

No thoughts.

No comparisons.

No research.

Just hear a word or phrase and immediately skip to what one has been TOLD to think.

There may even be feelings of anger or frustration associated with that reduced thinking output.

The reader MAY become aware of how his thought processes on a particular topic have changed, BUT he may only be SLIGHTLY aware of HOW those processes have changed.

The reader may even say to himself, “What’s going on here?”

BEFORE moving on to more pressing matters.

But UNLESS the reader had a usual procedure of clear, logical thinking, he may not have even become aware of his ‘abbreviated thinking.’

And, EVEN THEN, the reader may only become SLIGHTLY aware that his thoughts no longer follow an orderly method of thinking, but ‘skip ahead’ to the OUTCOME of that thought.

AND the emotion attached to that particular conclusion.

BEWARE of this shortened, condensed, brief way of thinking.

It IS deceptive.

It becomes easier to manipulate WHAT one thinks once HOW one thinks has already become manipulated.

HAS the reader become aware of his skipping, what used to be referred to as, “normal” thought processes?

HAS the reader taken any steps to combat this “abbreviated thinking” or “mental shorthand“?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

The New American Pastime? Declaring the USA is a Third World Country

Has the reader become aware of the following, growing social phenomena?

PERHAPS it occurs after a person has travelled over a bumpy, unfixed road filled with potholes?

PERHAPS it has happened after a person failed to get a signal for his cellphone?

PERHAPS it has come about after a person’s Internet has crashed for the fourth or fifth time that evening?

The person THEN throws their hands up in the air and declares, “This is nothing but a third-world country!”

MORE: Is the United States now a Third World Country?

One might get the idea that these thoughts about America becoming a third-world country might be just honest reactions to meeting the Frustration of the Day.

Except the Frustration of the Day appears to be following some sort of government/media campaign:  a campaign which has been going on for the past seven or eight or nine years.

And a campaign which continues to roll along today

SO, the next time the reader is tempted to describe a failing of the USA like that of a “Third World country,”  it is important to keep one thing in mind.

Come on!  Be a ‘team player!’ Wait until you see where this is all leading!

HAS the reader recently heard the USA described as a “third world country“?

WHAT did the reader think about that declaration?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
