Man’s stories LOVE to tell the tale that man is always advancing; ever moving forward up the ladder of PROGRESS.
Back in the day, one bulwark against such tales being successfully told was the HOME LIBRARY.
The Bible–a staple of almost ALL HOME LIBRARIES–offers a different account.
“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.”
–Ecclesiastes 1:9-11
In times past, the center of almost every home, the HOME LIBRARY contained information important to that household. Usually containing only a few books, the HOME LIBRARY was where a family turned for information on everyday life and its problems.
The home library also contained information important to that particular household: various family records and genealogies, many of which were contained in the family Bible.
Although it may have contained recipe books, a ‘how-to’ book or two OR a dictionary or other reference work, the ONE book almost ALL home libraries contained was God’s Word: the Bible.
One modern malady which the HOME LIBRARY aids in protecting its family against is the MEMORY HOLE. ‘Inconvenient’ information may disappear from the public’s view, BUT for the family with a well-stocked HOME LIBRARY, that information is sometimes available when it has disappeared elsewhere.
Some advances are clearly not in man’s favor.
Some advances are thought of as the greatest thing since sliced bread.
HOWEVER, many advances are a mixed bag: there is some things people consider to be good; some things people consider to be not-so-good.
Take, for instance: computers.
Yes, computers have sped up computations which used to take much longer to perform.
Yes, computers organize information in such a way that it is many times easier to access.
Yes, computers have gained popularity as a gateway to the Internet.
BUT, the advent of home computers has certainly contributed to the disappearance of the HOME LIBRARY.
The computer offers so much more information at one’s fingertips–never mind that the information may be INCORRECT–the HOME LIBRARY was felt to be something no longer needed.
Although the praises of the HOME LIBRARY can be sung long and loud, the HOME LIBRARY–NOT the computer–was the original home of the concept of ‘garbage in, garbage out.’
THEREFORE, if the home library was filled with books of stories and other untruth–instead of God’s Word–that family was more than likely to be filled with superstitions–or worse.
A famous witch once made the statement “I come from a family of witches. While you were learning the 23rd Psalm, I was reading Tolkien and CS Lewis.”
—C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien: Heretical Fruits
So, like today’s computers, the HOME LIBRARY was only as good as the information it contained.
And, IF that HOME LIBRARY contained (as most did) and referred to the Word of God, then that family got the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
DOES the reader have any sort of book collection or home library?
HAS the reader ever thought about how invaluable a home library could become if information becomes almost impossible to otherwise obtain?
It is not YET too late: there is still a little time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
