Michael Sam: Gay Announcement Prompts Media Frenzy

Coming Out Hailed by Corporate Media, Corporate Sports

A RUSH TO APPROVAL

The Missouri defensive end, Michael Sam, announces to reporters and his teammates that he is gay, and will be the first openly gay player in the NFL.

“I came to tell the world that I am an openly proud gay man,” said Sam in an interview with ESPN.

Sam was named most valuable player by his teammates and has lived up to that title. He was named SEC’s 2013 Defensive Player of the Year. Other athletes have come out publicly, but Sam has created a media storm.

Sam had told his teammates about his sexual orientation in August and has received nothing but support from his team and coaches.

Throughout his childhood and he experienced a lot of adversity.

“I endured so much in my past: seeing my older brother killed from a gunshot wound, not knowing that my oldest sister died when she was a baby and I never got the chance to meet her. My second oldest brother went missing in 1998, and me and my little sister were the last ones to see him … my other two brothers have been in and out of jail since 8th grade, currently both in jail.”

“Telling the world I’m gay is nothing compared to that,” Sam told ESPN.

Veteran Saints linebacker, Jonathan Vilma, said he is not so sure that a gay player will be very accepted.

“I think he would not be accepted as much as we think he would be accepted,” Vilma told NFL.com.

Sam claims that this is a huge step and a historical moment in the NFL world. He states that he knows that people can and more than likely will say hurtful and hateful things, but is not scared of who he is.

Sam’s announcement gained him over 18,000 Twitter followers. In one of his recent tweets he thanks the NFL, the New York Times and ESPN for all their support.

“I want to thank everybody for their support and encouragement, especially @espn, @nytimes and @nfl. I am proud to tell my story to the world!”
