Too Much Money?

TOO MUCH MONEY?

“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
–Luke 12:15

An interesting topic of conversation appeared the other day: it was neither looked for nor sought after.  It just popped up and there it was: ready to discuss.

At first, the focus of the discussion centered on the question, “Can you have too much money?”

THEN, the conversation unexpectedly turned once more: from the hypothetical “Can you have too much money?” to the HYPER-hypothetical “WHAT IF people who have a lot of money are really suffering, but don’t know it?”

Can one have TOO MUCH money?

EVERYONE had something critical to say about having a LOT of money.

Surprisingly, NO ONE took the side of “NO, you cannot have too much money.  Money is a good thing.”

Maybe that viewpoint wasn’t supported because NONE of those involved in the discussion had a lot of money.  IF one does not have a lot of money, one REALLY hopes that money is not all it is cracked up to be.

HOWEVER, IF one has spent their entire life trying to figure out how to get MORE MONEY, then it’s usually because that person thinks money is EVERYTHING but the root of all evil.

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
–1TIMOTHY 6:10

ALMOST as quickly as this verse from God’s Word made its appearance, the question arose about “What if rich people are really suffering but don’t know it?”

After a few comments about “Yeah, I’d like to suffer like that!” were made, THEN folks seemed to settle down and named a NUMBER OF REASONS they thought money (or a love of money) were NOT good.  However, upon thinking back to that time a few days ago, it did not appear that the ‘suffering rich people’ remark got a full discussion.

Relying on one’s memory is a tricky business, but here’s a few remembered comments on that subject of TOO MUCH MONEY?

“I know people who gave up the love of their life to chase after money.  They got their money, but seemed sad that they couldn’t get the love of their life too.”

“Money won’t keep you warm on a cold night.”

(It was pointed out when this remark was made that maybe money won’t keep you warm on a cold night, but money won’t steal your covers either. It was THEN offered that, “I thought we were being serious here.”  To which there was no reply.)

Someone else contributed the question (based on an observation):

“What if there’s nothing to buy with your money? Then, it’s just pieces of paper.”

“What if you are like Scrooge McDuck and get all wrapped up in your money? What then?”

“People who have money and try to buy food when food is scarce might be surprised that NO ONE wants to sell them food.  ‘You keep your money and I’ll keep my cow.’ You know what I’m saying?”

“What if you have a lot of money and no way to keep it safe?”

(It was pointed out to this person that Jesus addressed this very problem.)

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
–Matthew 6:19-21

The VERY animated discussion drew to a close with (surprisingly) ALL present agreeing it was better to have a LOT of money than NO money at all.

HAS the reader ever spent a few moments thinking about what it would be like to have TOO MUCH money?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
