Science is a collection of stories told to explain why things are the way things are. Quite frequently, those stories change.
Especially when the old stories are no longer believed by most of the people asking for answers.
Science provides the details to a number of myths which are taught as fact.
“But suppose we were to teach creationism. What would be the content of the teaching? Merely that a creator formed the universe and all species of life ready-made? Nothing more? No details?”
–Issac Asimov, The Dangerous Myth of Creationism, Jan 1982 Penthouse interview
It is the details–the sense of “scientific” precision–which make the stories of science believable to many.
As far as dispensing stories goes, there’s not much difference between the scientist and the witch doctor except a lab coat.
Both tell stories to people who want to know “Why?”
“Science is no more than an investigation of a miracle we can never explain, and art is an interpretation of that miracle.”
–Ray Bradbury, The Martian Chronicles
The one thing which makes scientific stories more believable than others is the decimal point.
The decimal point implies complete control and precision–and truth. The decimal point says “We have measured, and calculated and have been very, very careful about the entire process. And you can believe what we say right down to the fourth decimal place.”
“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”
Contrast the lies of men to God’s Word, which is truth.
“thy word is truth.”
“God is not a man, that he should lie;”
“[T]he majority of politicians, on the evidence available to us, are interested not in truth but in power and in the maintenance of that power. To maintain that power it is essential that people remain in ignorance, that they live in ignorance of the truth, even the truth of their own lives. What surrounds us therefore is a vast tapestry of lies, upon which we feed.”
– Harold Pinter, Nobel Lecture (Literature), 2005
Don’t put your faith in the various collected stories of man.
Those stories will change.
Put your faith in Jesus Christ.
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
