Modern Life: Alone in a Crowd

alone in a crowd

Living in the tumultuous hurly-burly that is our modern world, it is easy to go DAYS without crossing paths with one’s own thoughts.

Modern man confidently believes that living in this arena of non-stop activity is a big advantage over his ancestors.

But it is NOT.

Modern man will point to the many technological “advances” which he believes puts him above his less technologically-gifted forefathers. HOWEVER, these “advances” have generally contributed mightily to the confused ruckus we call modern life.

Yes, modern man generally does not have to physically toil to earn his daily bread.

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
–Genesis 3:19

(Probably just a coincidence, huh?)

Yes, modern man has improved upon the ways to more effectively kill large groups of his fellow man.

(Probably just another coincidence, huh?)

Yes, modern man (at this present point in the end times) can move from Point A to Point B in a speedier fashion than did those who came before him.

BUT, modern man also has increasingly urbanized his surroundings. Most would maintain that this leads to more opportunities, availability of better-paying jobs and the saving of commuting time each day between work and home.

However, this packing of more and more people into less and less space has led to several disadvantages for modern man–including one in particular.

In the push-and-shove of today’s world, modern man has been provided with a multitude of various games, gadgets and gizmos to keep himself endlessly amused. This system has been designed to provide more amusements, more distractions and more ways to separate a man from being with his thoughts by leaving him with NO time for that activity.

Why ponder the “deeper things” of life?

There’s Fortnite to play!

Why concern yourself with the state of the world and the direction it is headed?

There’s cable network news, which will tell us about all of that.  One channel will tell us how good things are IF there is a Democratic president and another to tell us how great life is IF a Republican is in the White House!

Why wonder about right and wrong and what the Bible says?

There’s a whole slew of experts, scientists and well-liked celebrities who keep their finger on the pulse of today’s life–and most of them don’t have anything good to say about that old book!  Nobody pays any attention to that old-fashioned blah-blah-blah anyway!

In short, regardless of how many others squeeze up against us every day, modern man feels increasingly alone in this crowd. There are several reasons for this.  A few quick questions for the reader.

Has the reader noticed this growing mistrust; this increasing alienation from others?

Can the reader guess why this might be?

Does the reader believe this separation from the fellowship of man is getting worse–or does the reader believe this estranged relationship with others is just part of normal life?

Has the reader thought about ANY of this?

OR has the reader been “too busy” to think about much of anything?

Spending some time with this odd modern situation prompted a few observations.

  1. In bygone days, when one wished to amuse oneself, one either read or passed the time doing something constructive.  IF one wished to play a game, at least one other person had to be available.  With video games, the Internet, computers and game consoles, another person is not only NOT necessary: another person might not even be desired.
  2. With the decrease in contemplation (thinking time), thoughts, opinions and other information that is already prepackaged has increased the amount of INSTANT THOUGHT!  (No thinking is now needed.)
  3. This modern alienation has prompted a caution when dealing with others.  Why does the reader suppose this has come about? How many neighbors or people one sees on one’s way to work does the reader actually KNOW?
  4. The isolation is designed to nudge moderns into finding ways (such as games and other time-wasters) to combat this mental version of solitary confinement.
  5. This circumstance will not get any better.  It only gets worse.

Is the reader surrounded by people?

How many of these people does the reader know?

How many of these people does the reader call “friend“?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
