May Be Habit Forming

habit forming?

What a difference fifty years makes!

IF one lives AFTER that fifty-year dividing line, one ONLY is personally aware of that which has happened in one’s own, shorter lifetime.

IF one is OLDER than fifty, then one has personal experiences with what once was.

(This also helps illustrate one reason for the near-constant rate of change in modern societies/cultures.)

And so it is with what was once one of the most advertised phrases in the English language.

IF one were alive in the 1950s to 1970s, one phrase which apparently seemed to be EVERYWHERE was “This product may be habit forming.”

The 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was enacted because the earlier Federal Food and Drugs Act of 1906 was not worded strictly enough and did not include cosmetics. Two important concepts introduced in this new act were adulteration and misbranding. For example, false or exaggerated claims commonly were placed on new drug labels and often misled the consumer. This was considered misbranding. All controlled substances were required to be labeled “Warning: May be habit forming .” This act also provided the legal status for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Adulteration deals with the preparation and/or storage of a medication. Mishandling of the food or drug may cause injury or even death to a consumer. This act described the exact labeling for products and defined misbranding and adulteration as being illegal. The new law also required drug companies to include package inserts and directions to the consumer regarding safe use (see more information under the section titled.
What does “may be habit forming” mean?

So, “May be habit forming” was the KINDER, GENTLER warning provided by the government in the days before the more dire, more dramatic “addiction” stories began to be peddled to the public.

The phrase was so common, it inspired–as such requirements often do–some to poke fun at it.

It was once observed of a young man of this time period: “I only see you with pretty girls. Do you only date very attractive girls?”

His answer?

“What can I say? May be habit forming.”

May be habit forming.

The reason one does NOT hear this once-common phrase today?

The US Food and Drug Administration repealed the labeling requirement in 1997.

In addition, section 502(d) of the Act (21 U.S.C. 352(d)), which required the
labels of certain habit-forming drugs to bear the statement “Warning-May be habit forming,” is
repealed. The amendments to section 503(b)(4) and the repeal of 502(d) of the Act became
effective February 19, 1998.
Implementation of Section 126 of the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act of 1997 —Elimination of Certain Labeling Requirements

May be habit forming” was a warning for a time which was less harsh.

AFTER 1997, the stories of addiction were being told and re-told with gusto.

IF one lives AFTER a fifty-year dividing line, one ONLY is personally aware of that which has happened in one’s own short lifetime.

IF one is OLDER than fifty, then one has personal experiences with what once was.

Perhaps this near-constant state of basic change–which FORCES a new set of experiences on the public every 20-30-40-50 years–is a prime contributor to what was once called “The Generation Gap“?

Which was another popular topic of casual conversation in the days long past.

DOES the reader have personal experiences with a time which no longer exists?

DID that time seem better or worse than what one experiences today?

TO what does the reader attribute these differences?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
