There Were No Good Old Days

Good old days weren't so good
THE GOOD OLD DAYS: Weren’t so good.

ONE OF THE FEW ISSUES ON WHICH BOTH THE WORLD AND THE BIBLE AGREE

“For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.”
Ecclesiastes 1:18

There were no ‘good old days.’

This is one of the very, very few issues on which the world and the Bible agree. Humans often suffer from selective memories: they mostly remember the good times and try to forget the bad.

There were only the days before one knew.

There was only the time when one was ignorant.

“Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a bad memory.”
Franklin P. Adams

“Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.”
Ecclesiastes 7:10

Many people fondly remember ‘former times.’ They sometimes wish they could return to those ‘carefree days.’

There’s nothing to go back to: what you thought was there was nothing more than an illusion.

The world has one way of putting this.

You can’t go home again.”

The Bible has another way–at least as it pertains to believers in Jesus Christ.

“And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:62

When someone tries to get you to look back to the ‘good old days,’ there’s a fair chance they’re selling something.

Don’t look back: there’s nothing back there.

Nostalgia is a seductive liar.

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

THE GOSPEL

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
