Those Who are Friends of the World Have No Other Friends

Friend of the world

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
–James 4:4

James 4:4 is a fairly well-known Bible verse.

It declares that all who are friends of the world are enemies of God.  There is no compromise; there is no “luke warm,” there is no “be reasonable“: there are friends and enemies of God.

And ALL those who are friends with the world are enemies of God.

This is backed up by 1John 2:15-16

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1John 2:15-16

Jesus Christ explained why this hatred between the world and those who follow Jesus exists.

“If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
–John 15:19

“I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”
–John 17:14

The world hates the followers of Jesus because they are unlike those who are of this world: they are not friends of this world.  Their highest allegiance is to Jesus Christ, not to the world and the things of this world.

BUT one of the sad realities of those who value this world and the things in it: they may be a friend of the world, but they have no other real friends.

Let that sink in.

Those who are friends with the world have no other, true friends.

Oh, they may lie to themselves.

Their “friends” may lie to them as well.

But when a person is friends with the world, he forsakes all human friendship.

The friend of the world has no real friends: he only has associates.  His real friendship is with the world and the things of this world.  All other associations are only mutually beneficial relationships.

If the reader doubts this, he only need ask himself: “How many–if any–of my “friends” would claim me IF I was destitute?”

Truly, hopelessly destitute.

Likewise, he might ask: “IF I had a “friend” who became a “homeless bum,” how long would I remain friends with him?  Why?”

If the reader is brutally honest with himself, he will discover that most–if not all–of his “friends” come from a socio-economic class either the same or slightly above the reader. Some may come from the socio-economic group slightly below–particularly if family ties are involved.

When one is a friend of the world, there is no higher loyalty than to the world and the things of the world (money, power, comfort, fame, control, etc.).  This is especially noticeable when the persons in question come from the rich and celebrated groups.

Yes, it is hard to believe.

But only because what is true is taught to be unbelievable.

DOES the reader know where his true loyalties lie?

OR does the reader lie to himself to make his mercenary ways easier to swallow?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
