Compulsions of the Flesh: Brought Into Bondage

“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.”
–2PETER 2:19

Recently an acquaintance (who has had problems with strong drink) mentioned that a certain amount of the liquid (which he had previously restricted himself to) was “no longer working.”

He then floated the idea that he perhaps he should increase the amount of strong drink he allowed himself each day.

He also asked for suggestions on this topic.

The main suggestion offered was “Rarely is MORE of what’s ailing you the solution.”

Later that same day, 2PETER 2:19 came to mind.

“…for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.”

Basically, whatever compulsion of the flesh overcomes a man, that same man is then in bondage to that same compulsion.

This then brought to mind all of the many compulsions which have been labeled as “addictions” by moderns.

AS IF there was no choice  by the person involved.

Sex, drugs, alcohol, chocolate, shopping, pornography, fatty food, smoking, pizza, bacon, whatever.

“Addictions” are physical cravings which not so very long ago were more accurately labeled “lusts.”

OR, more accurately still: the “lusts of the flesh.”

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1JOHN 2:15-16

Oh, by the way: still no word about what the acquaintance decided.

A great many tales have sprung up around these fleshly lusts–particularly from those who profit by “solving” these problems…

…which never seem to resolve themselves.

If the reader still believes the many tales told about the fleshly compulsions–such as being a result of “brain chemicals” or “chemistry” OR the ones about the “enablers” sharing co-responsibility for the choices made by the one with the fleshly lusts–then the reader will likely NEVER put two and two together to overcome such bondage.

OF COURSE, this is the main reason so many worldly stories surround these fleshly compulsions.

IF one does not know the problem, then one rarely finds the solution.

IS the reader tormented by a physical compulsion?

DOES the reader know someone who is tormented by a lust?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?
