The SHOCKING Power of Common Admissions

shocking

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
–Romans 8:18

“It’s not been such a bad life.”

SOMETIMES, the most ordinary of statements can elicit shock and surprise from the listener.

And so it was–not so long ago–that the statement which heads this piece, was suddenly spoken by a person who, to that point, had not indicated this belief in ANY form.

Which is WHAT was so shocking about the admission.

“It’s not been such a bad life.”

These words were uttered by a man whose PREVIOUSLY most-frequent expressions seemed to be ones of pain or discomfort.

Once upon a time, these MANY groans, grunts and squeals of displeasure were remarked upon by a bystander.

The answer?

“It’s how I deal with my pain–whether it is big or little.  Most of the time, I’ll cuss–but that’s just the way I deal with pain.  It makes it seem smaller.”

It was at this point the man provided a very SCIENTIFIC-sounding word.

“That’s what they call it when someone cusses to relieve their pain.”

Maybe providing a SCIENTIFIC-SOUNDING word made the whole process seem more real to this person?

“It’s not been such a bad life.”

At any rate, this very ordinary statement had the power to SHOCK and SURPRISE the listener–because, until that admission, there had been NO indication whatsoever that the person felt this way.

IN FACT, this simple phrase was SO shocking–coming from a person who had previously uttered only exclamations of distress and woe–that the listener did NOT even inquire into what it was that prompted the speaker to make such an uncharacteristic statement.

Maybe the one who made that shocking statement was feeling ‘philosophical’?

Maybe the one who made that shocking statement was feeling ‘mellowed’ by one the many substances of the world which the speaker used regularly?

Maybe the one who made that shocking statement was struck by his “not-so-bad life” and wanted to share that feeling?

WHATEVER it was, this simple phrase so SHOCKED the listener, that WEEKS later, his mind STILL walked back to the time it was made.

This simple phrase so SHOCKED the listener, that WEEKS later, the one conclusion made–upon reflecting on that occasion–was

The most common admissions are sometimes the most shocking.”

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
