Temporary: Man is As the Grass

grass

“All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
–Isaiah 40:6-8

There is more than one place in God’s Word in which a man’s life is compared to grass.

“As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. “
–Psalm 103:15-16

“For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away”
–1PETER 1:24

This comparison is to illustrate how TEMPORARY; how fleeting; how fragile; how here-today-gone-tomorrow is the VERY speedy nature of man’s physical existence on this earth.

The Bible also uses a few other comparisons to make this point: comparing a man’s life to a vapor, to smoke and to the wind.

“Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
–James 4:13-15

“For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.”
–Psalm 102:3

“My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.”
–Job 7:6-7

Vapor, smoke and wind: all very TEMPORARY, very FLEETING, very BRIEF parts of life. ALL are transitory, lasting only a very short time.

OF COURSE, in such a transient life, any discomfort suffered for the name of Jesus is also ephemeral.

HOWEVER, while any PHYSICAL discomfort suffered for the name of Jesus is short-lived, the benefits of that discomfort are eternal in nature.

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
–2CORINTHIANS 4:17-18

The world works overtime to convince man that this life is VERY IMPORTANT; that this life is ALL THAT THERE IS; that this life should be the FOCUS of his thoughts and hopes and dreams.

BUT this life is only a test: a very short, temporary test; a pop quiz to determine where each individual will spend the rest of eternity.

A man life is over in a flash.

Like grass in a field on a sunny day.

Like smoke.

Like a vapor.

Like the wind.

A VERY IMPORTANT distinction for the reader to keep in mind in the days to come.

IS the reader convinced that this life is the single most important part of his existence?

IS the reader convinced that this life is all that there is?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
