Things Little Upon the Earth

Proverbs 30 has a few observations about those things which are considered to be LITTLE.

“There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:  The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.”
–Proverbs 30:24-28

A few observations about the observations found in Proverbs 30.

  1. Though these four are labelled “little upon the earth,” they are ALSO named as “wise.”
  2. Ants labor through the summer to store food for the winter.  Ants are commonly used to illustrate the principle of industriousness.
  3. Conies (most commonly, rabbits) are tagged as “feeble” but live in strong places.
  4. The locusts cited in Proverbs 30:27 are often given by the foolish as a contradiction to Revelation 9:11.

“And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.  And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”

Those who study their Bibles will ask, “What are kept in the bottomless pit?  Are LOCUSTS kept in the bottomless pit?”

“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. “
–Jude 1:6

Those who study their Bibles will ALSO know that the LOCUSTS described in Revelation 9:2-11 are NOT insects but rebellious spirits.  One way they can KNOW locusts are NOT referred to is because of Proverbs 30:27.

5. It does not matter if one is rich or poor, the spider’s web will be found in every house.

Four things which are little upon the earth but wise.

There is a wider application to see in everyday life of these four little things.

“But blessed are your eyes, for they see”
–Matthew 13:16

HAS the reader ever stopped to consider even ONE of the four things which are said to be ‘little upon the earth’?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?
