Sometimes…

tree

“I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.”

Alfred Joyce Kilmer, 1913

A little over one-hundred years ago, a poet named Alfred Joyce Kilmer (better known as Joyce Kilmer) penned a simple, 12-line poem titled “Trees.”

Unlike the majority of Kilmer’s work, this little poem became well-known, particularly the first and last couplets.

It is suspected that the poem became well-known because of its construction, its subject matter (familiar to almost all) and the simple comfort its verses provided.

Kilmer’s life would furnish the careful reader argument that he was not a believer.

However, Kilmer’s poem brought the small comforts of the familiar to perhaps MILLIONS. And this seeming contradiction provokes several observations.

1- Kilmer was 100 percent correct: ONLY God can make a tree.

2- Kilmer–though a non-believer–provided a means of comfort (however small it may be) to MANY down through the years–most likely including, at least a FEW believers.

3- Once more providing proof that sometimes God can and does use ANYONE to do his work.

Sometimes…

Including little known poets.

Including non-believers.

Including ALL men, no matter how wicked, evil or foolish they may appear to others.

BECAUSE the wicked, the evil and the foolish are mostly all God has to work with.

WAS the reader familiar with “Trees” or Joyce Kilmer?

DID the reader have any thoughts about “Trees“?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” -–Romans 1:16
