What IF?

While driving down the highway on the way to town over the past several weeks, a sign at a small, country church was noticed.

NOW, once upon a time, that church sign was composed of brick with a glass cover where the pastor (or whoever took care of that sign) put his messages. BUT NOW–in our MODERN world–the sign is composed of brick with an inset of electronics display.  The messages NOW can be changed from the comfort of the inside of the church with a push of several buttons.

At any rate, the message on the sign for the past several weeks has been a simple one.

The sign merely said ‘WHAT IF?’

And that was all there was to the message.

Oh, after 20 seconds or so of ‘WHAT IF?’, there was an invitation to join the church for Sunday worship.

But that was it.

Have to admit: the sign’s message DID catch the attention of at least ONE onlooker.  And, the sign was checked ever few days to see if anything else was added to the message.

To, perhaps, CLARIFY it?

But nothing more was added to that original message.

AFTER about a week, the speculation about the message began.

What did it mean?

Was it referring to a past sermon by the church’s pastor?

Was each onlooker who saw that enigmatic message supposed to “fill in the blanks“?

What was the answer?

As mentioned previously, SPECULATION about the message began–“SPECULATION” being a bit fancier way to say “GUESSING“.

Was the ‘WHAT IF’ message for those who might read the sign who were NON-believers?

(Maybe the message was a shortened form of “WHAT IF everything in God’s Word is TRUE?” BUT, the committed NON-believer would have the ready answer to such a question.

WHAT IF it isn’t?”

Then, a standstill is reached. HARDLY a successful recruiting tool–particularly when one COULD preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Why trade a message which has the ‘power of God’ behind it with a message which doesn’t?

Of course, the churches make this deal with the devil every day.)

Further speculation surrounds the mystery of the “WHAT IF” message: PERHAPS it will remain unsolved?

UNTIL the day when the pastor who CONCEIVED and WROTE the message is consulted.

DOES the reader have any ideas of his own about the meaning behind ‘What IF?’

It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
