IF One is Not Moving Forward, Then One is Moving Backward

“Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.”
–Jeremiah 15:6

A VERY interesting discussion recently took place about not standing still.

Actually, what was in question was the claim “IF one is not moving forward, then one is moving backward.”

The discussion touched upon a LOT of matters, but one pertinent conversation went a little like the following.

“So, is that in the Bible?”

“What?”

“Is it in the Bible that ‘if you are not moving forward, then you are moving backward?”

“Well, not in so many words…”

“So you admit that it is not Biblical at all!”

“Not really. God’s Word is full of advice and that advice normally advises the reader to move forward; to improve himself and his behavior before it is too late.

In fact, I don’t believe that there is ANYWHERE in God Word that tells the reader to go backward! Actually, the Bible says to not even LOOK back.”

“Well now…that’s something to think about, for sure.”

At some point, the French psychologist Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie was mentioned (although his name escaped the memory at the time of the one mentioning him–though NOT Coué’s famous words .)

Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie; (26 February 1857 – 2 July 1926) was a French psychologist and pharmacist who introduced a popular method of psychotherapy and self-improvement based on optimistic autosuggestion.

Not many folks have any recollection of Coué TODAY, but MANY have heard of his famous matra which he had his patients regularly recite.

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”

No doubt there were those who benefited from such suggestions.

BUT obviously, Coué did NOT believe in someone standing still.

Going back to the Bible, God’s Word repeatedly mentions that God will judge those who slide backwards into SIN.

In fact, the Old Testament mentions ‘backsliding’ as a way a person returns to his former bad self and behaviors.

“And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.”
–Jeremiah 3:11

“And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.”
–Hosea 11:7

“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”
–Hosea 14:4

So, is is TRUE that if one is not moving forward, he is moving backward?

The reader need only think of his past escapades and behaviors.

When the reader was IMPROVING himself and moving forward, he forsook many of his former, sinful ways.

This discussion will, God willing, continue.

WHAT does the reader think about this matter?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
