The Basis of ALL Worship: Humbling One’s Self

pray

If one reads God’s Word CAREFULLY, he will soon discover that there is NOT much good which is said about the haughty and proud.

IN FACT, if one wants to get on the good side of God Almighty, one will HUMBLE himself and present himself as ‘no one special.’

The next three verses are representative of the two VERY different manners God treats the proud and the humble.

“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
–James 4:6

“Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.”
–Jeremiah 50:31

“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
–1PETER 5:5

God makes VERY specific promises to both the arrogant and the humble–and, while God may take a while, God ALWAYS keeps his promises.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
–James 4:10

“For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
–Luke 14:11

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time”
–1Peter 5:6

This is particularly true on the day of the LORD: the day Jesus Christ returns to earth.

“The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low”
–Isaiah 2:11-12

Right about now, there are most likely a number of readers asking themselves the same question.

“How do I humble myself before God?”

There are a NUMBER of ways–NONE of them particularly hard to do–BUT the modern man seems to resist almost all of those ways.

Modern man is a PROUD man.

One may humble himself by FASTING.

Though many moderns have some fairly strange notions about fasting, fasting is a way to demonstrate to God that NOTHING–not even food–is more important than Him.

“When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.”
–Psalm 69:10

“I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.”
–Psalm 35:14

Ezra called a fast for the purpose of humbling him and his traveling party before God for protection and guidance.

“Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.”
–Ezra 8:21

So, the giving up of food for a while (usually a SHORT while) is a way of humbling one’s self before God.

Another way is to SUBMIT yourself to the civil authorities, whether they are good or whether they are BAD.

In America, we hear a LOT about resisting TYRANNY and the wonderful doings of our forefathers who rebelled against the civil authorities.

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. “
–1Samuel 15:23

“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:”
—1 Peter 2:13-15

So, it pretty clear where God’s Word stands on that topic.

An additional way to humble oneself is to SUBMIT one’s self to God and OBEY his commands.

OF COURSE, ‘obey’ and ‘submit’ are dirty words to most Americans.

Submitting to God and obeying His commands is the basis of ALL worship, whether to God or to something else.

Maybe that’s why most people pray (talk to God) on their knees?

[There are about a dozen ways to humble one’s self before God.  God willing, they might make a good article in the near future.]

HAS the reader ever humbled himself before the LORD?

OR, has the reader TALKED about doing so?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
